She was left panting as Nick pulled back.

He was still holding her hands flat against his chest, and she smoothed his top down once more before stepping back. “I’ll see you tonight?” she asked. His eyes glowed with satisfaction, and butterflies flitted through her body.

“Yes, you will,” he agreed, but a shadow fell over his eyes, and she guessed the reason.

“Try not to be angry all day,” she advised gently, knowing that he would become consumed by it. In response, he grunted. “Try,” she urged.

He rolled his eyes, saw the look she was giving him, and sighed. “I will try not to be angry,” he replied. “But I’m not making any promises.”

She was surprised when he kissed her again, slowly and sweetly, until she was left staring as he walked off, grabbed his keys, and headed for the door.

She stood there with her lips still pouting and breathing rapidly. When she saw everything arranged beautifully on the table, she gasped. She bit her lip as the front door closed, stunned that he had done this for her.

Besides pancakes, soft rolls and cereals were displayed on the table, along with a jug of milk and oranges. He had prepared a buffet for her. She wasn’t sure what to think. Was he going overboard?

It was true he was, but a bright, happy ball unfurled and danced inside her.

She sat back, eating her fill, and patted her full belly, bemused by Nick’s meticulous preparations.

After looking at the spread, she wondered if he intended her to stay in his home permanently. If he intended to show her the benefits of living with a partner. A mate.

A slow smile spread over her face.

It would have been better if they hadn’t spent most of the night awake with him unable to sleep. She grimaced.

She assumed Nick didn’t usually sleep like that and that it was because someone was in his usually empty home.

She straightened and cleaned up, picking everything off the table and placing it in his cupboard, where she found empty spaces. Putting the milk and orange back in the refrigerator, she slipped on her shoes and picked up her phone.

When she entered the home, she had done the same as Nick and placed the items on the little side table. When opening and closing the door, she began dialling, feeling surprisingly cheerful despite the restless night prior.

“Hello, Harper,” Isla said cheerfully.

“Are you busy today, or can you help me catch up on some backlog?” she asked.

“There’s always a backlog of orders,” Isla said with a laugh.

“It’s true. My backlog is at least a sign that business is doing okay.”

Isla chuckled. Harper heard her moving around and chatting in the background. “Where are you?”

“I walked into town and decided to check out the pop-up shops the humans had set up.”

“Oh, I see. Well done you,” Harper said, and she meant it. This was a huge achievement for Isla and deserved recognition.

“I like the food they serve there. I tried a little bit of everything.”

“Oooo, Barbeque Bites food must be my favourite,” Harper shared with her.

She found Barbecue Bites food to be slightly hot but not to the point of burning her taste buds. The dish was spicy and had sticky sauces and marinated meats that were heavily seasoned.

“I haven’t tried that yet. I’ll go there next. Anyway, I’m not doing anything today, so I can come in,” Isla said.

“Okay, grab a few for me. I have just eaten, but I feel like I have room for Barbecue Bites. Can you ask them if it is okay to reheat their food, and if so, can they provide instructions on how to do so? Then I can eat it for lunch.” Many humans take knowledge for granted daily. There was always something new to learn every day for her and Numbers.

“Okay, I’ll ask,” Isla replied with a laugh. “I’ll see you soon.”
