There was no way she would leave Isla alone when it was so dangerous out there. Even though they both had claws and were stronger than a single human, Isla may crumble or become feral if confronted with danger. Either way, Harper wouldn’t leave her alone.

After they cleaned the tools, she walked with Isla to her Jeep and waved goodbye. When she got home, she slipped inside quickly and went to her bedroom. She grabbed a bag and threw in some clothes she might need at Nick’s. Once she had a full bag, she slipped from her home and headed to Nick’s.

Seeing his house come into view, she froze in her tracks, surprised by what she was seeing. There was a soft light emanating inside the house. He usually finished work well after her; always returning home late.

Sliding around to the front of his home, she grabbed hold of the wood railing; there was slight dampness in the wood from humidity during the day. The cool breeze made it feel cold to the touch. She climbed up the stairs.

“Hello, Nick?” she asked as she knocked on the door to see if anyone was there.

He was slumped over in a chair in the lounge as the door swung open. There was a glass of whiskey beside him, and he had his laptop open. She sighed as she placed her bag in front of the door and stepped inside.

She figured out immediately why he had left early and worked from home. Undoubtedly, he took the fact that there was a traitor on his team very personally and was hurt. He decided to return home because the thought of facing them was too much for him.

After tossing and turning all night, she wasn’t surprised that he fell asleep when he got home. She was convinced he must be exhausted with everything occupying his thoughts.

Harper removed things from his reach, so he wouldn’t knock them down when he started to wake up, like knocking his drink onto his laptop.

She shushed him as she lifted a blanket over him, and he mumbled sleepily. She covered him up to his chin. He mumbled a bit more before falling back to sleep.

Taking the glass to the sink, she returned silently to the hall after picking up her bag on the way back.

Following a quick wash, she slipped into the spare bedroom. She closed her eyes as she slipped under the covers, and after almost an instant, she began to drift off to sleep.

A soft humming filled her ears, drawing her out of sleep as she turned over in bed. When she peeled open her eyes, she saw the clock and blinked at the time as she looked at it.

She stretched and heard Nick humming again as she yawned. Harper blinked again. She wondered if he was always so cheerful when he awoke in the morning.

It took her a few moments to slip out of bed and walk to the bathroom. She heard Nick pause as he noticed her moving around. As soon as she had freshened up, she returned to the bedroom.

Pulling on a purple skirt embellished with lilac flowers and a white top with ruffles, she slipped on some open-toe sandals and walked into the kitchen to find Nick pouring her cereal and humming as he buzzed around the kitchen, picking up milk and juice.

“Do you wake up like this every morning?” she asked, her head cocked.

He jumped and turned with an embarrassed look on his face. He laughed and shook his head. “No. When I know I have a beautiful female in my home that I wish to keep here, I do.” His eyes widened for a moment as if he surprised himself by saying the words aloud.

She felt a blush heat her cheeks, ducking her head. She could feel her chest swelling with emotion, her beast purring happily inside.

“I didn’t mean to come out with that. At least not yet,” he murmured.

Harper was glad that he did. It showed how he really felt, and him blurting that out with everything going on showed how much she meant to him. Even if it was selfish for her to enjoy him with everything going on, she didn’t feel any regrets about doing so.

Numbers have repeatedly proven time and time again; life could be too short if they didn’t make the most of it. The misplaced compliment he gave her was all she needed at the time.

“It’s fine,” she replied. “I like that you speak your mind. Numbers are less verbal than humans. With our beasts, we communicate freely by expressing our feelings, thoughts, and ideas without barriers. It’s all about being open.”

“There’s no point hiding things from you then,” he joked. His eyes were sharp, and his intense gaze made her heart race when he added, “And I meant what I said.”

Nick didn’t have a beast that could scream ‘mine’ and claim her, but his words did more than that.

It reassured her that it was more than just lust. He was quite clear he wouldn’t abandon her when things got more intimate, not like she had heard from some humans. By letting her know he was fully invested in her and their future, he created another layer to their relationship.

Nick

It was a gradual process, but as she continued to add her touches to his space, it started to become less of a place for him to stay and more of a place for them to build a home together.

When he first broke through her tough barriers, she lit his whole life with radiant light. He realised that her presence in his life not only brought a sense of comfort but also a feeling of permanence that he’d never felt before.

Slowly, Nick’s home began to fill with feminine pieces. The bathroom was adorned with frilly soft towels, creamy soups, feminine products, and brushes of all kinds that still baffled him.
