What was supposed to be a beautiful day turned into another nightmare. I’m not sure why that surprised me. It’s the way my life worked.

“Nothing gold can.” I remembered the poem I read in middle school.

Vertical lines of rain fell from the sky farther down the road. I guess when it rains, it really does pour.

I took my time walking home. Rosie had practice, and I didn’t really feel like being alone.

“Heh,” I chuckled. What a turn of events. I hated people, yet I found myself, alone, wishing Chase or Rosie weren’t so far away.

The world hadn’t felt that empty in a long time. Not since Dad died.

I moved along the sidewalk, keeping my eyes on the ground. I missed the extra car parked in the driveway.

The couple on my doorstep were unavoidable.

“Hello Mother.”
