I didn’t even see her face.

Chapter 2

Josie

I turned on my heel.

After four years, I should be used to it by now, but tonight’s conquest stung more than it should have. Well, assuming Evan took advantage of the blonde clinging to him like a tree frog. She’d jumped on him the minute he stepped out the door. Michael and Amber stood off to the side of me in their own personal conversation, but Amber caught sight of Evan and rolled her eyes.

Don’t get me wrong, the girl was cute. Probably a freshman or sophomore. Evan wasn’t too picky. She was right up his alley with her blonde hair and tight ass. Plus, she was skinny and perky and everything I wasn’t.

My curves weren’t outrageous. I stayed in decent shape with yoga, and I was totally okay with my body. Evan liked model thin. That wasn’t me in any way, shape, or form.

I was a damn fool to even think about telling him how I felt.

“Hey, you ready?” Amber said as she linked her arm with mine. “Michael’s going to meet us there. I told him we had a few things to talk about first.”

I forced a smile and did my best not to look at Evan as the blonde continued to lay a fat kiss on his lips. Ugh. My stomach rolled. I could almost hear their lips smacking together, and that would just lead to other body parts smacking too. It always did. I was going to be sick. “To leave? Yeah. I’m definitely ready.”

Amber glanced at Evan. “I hate it when girls do that shit.” She tugged me away. “Let’s go. I’ll chew his ass out when he gets to the party.”

“I think I’m skipping the party tonight.” I glanced back as she slithered down his body doing a snaky sex dance. Not that snakes do it that way. At least they don’t mate for life. Yanking my gaze from the show, I glanced at Amber. My cheeks were burning with either anger or embarrassment. Probably both. “I can’t do this. It was stupid to even consider it.”

“Don’t be daft.” She pushed me toward her car. “That,” she nodded behind us before continuing, “is all on her, not on him.”

We stopped beside her two-door red coupe, appropriately named PMS because of how moody it was. Some days it started, other days it just growled and refused.

“Just go to the party. Talk to him.” Amber climbed into the driver’s seat. “Don’t let some puck bunny get under your skin.” Then she slammed the door and it bounced back open. “Damn it.” She slammed it again, this time remembering to lift it up slightly.

I glanced back at Evan and the blonde who was still draped over him. His hands were on her waist and his eyes were wide. I could see the flash in his gaze, the one that said he was getting some tonight. His lips lifted into a sexy smile. “Yeah, under my skin like a tick.”

Shaking my head, I got in the car just as Amber cranked an old Carrie Underwood song. We started singing, “Before He Cheats”, and that lifted my mood. At least for a minute.

I had a feeling my heart was going to be shattered one way or another. Either by my own cowardice or by Evan’s rejection.

Evan

I pushed the leech off me. She was relentless, trying to force herself closer even as I held her away. I smacked my lips in an attempt to remove her thick lip gloss. That shit was nasty. I never understood how women could stand the waxy, putrid cherry taste.

“Hi, Evan,” she said in a trying-to-hard sexy, breathy voice that told me she practiced it. She was cute with blonde hair, perky tits, and smooth skin. Normally, I’d be all over the free offer, but something about her turned me off more than on.

“Hi.” I didn’t want to be completely rude. “I don’t know you.” Okay, maybe I did.

“Not yet.” She swayed her hips and bit her lower lip. “But the night’s still young.”

I had forgotten I was holding her at arm’s length and yanked my hands back. “Not tonight, sweetheart.”

Her expression went from playful to bitchy in less than two seconds. “Seriously? You’re turning me down? You sleep with everyone.”

Ouch. It wasn’t entirely true nor was it untrue. I had my fair share of one-nighters, but I didn’t sleep with every chick who threw herself at me. There were standards, and truth be told, she checked every box until she attached herself to me. And her attitude now wasn’t helping. “Yeah, I’m not interested. Go find T.J., he’s always up for a quickie.”

She huffed and spun on her heel. I didn’t watch her walk away.

“What happened there?” Michael asked with a big grin still plastered on his face.

“Doesn’t take rejection well, I guess.” I slapped his shoulder. “Where’re Amber and JoJo?”
