Without a doubt, Alec was someone she could stare at all day long.

Too bad the moment he opened his mouth, all that changed. It was hard for her to see the good when he was so full of himself. On a professional level, she’d be as civil to him as she needed to be, but away from the stadium, that was where she planned to draw the line.

The Sharks ended up winning two of the three games in this home series. Camryn wasn’t looking forward to their upcoming stint out of town—three games on the west coast followed by another three games up north—but she knew before she’d taken the position that travel was going to be involved and that there would be few days she got to spend at home. Mostly, she was uncertain what she’d do in her down time when they were away. Although she felt welcomed, she hadn’t been part of the team long enough to call anyone a friend yet.

She knew that would change over time, but for now, she planned to hang out in her hotel room and not venture too far away on her own.

She wasn’t sure she understood the whole flying at night thing immediately following tonight’s game, but she’d get used to it eventually. Most importantly, the guys needed enough time to rest and to practice before they played again on Tuesday.

As she stood in line waiting to board the plane, it saddened her to see the guys having to leave their wives and kids behind. Sure, some of them traveled to the out of town games, but it just wasn’t feasible for them to attend every single one. Especially when there were kids to consider too.

Camryn scanned the terminal hoping to catch a glimpse of Alec. She was curious as to why he wasn’t married, but considering his attitude, it would make sense why he was still single. Who’d want to be with someone like him anyway, someone so full of themselves they couldn’t see much of anything else.

She knew it was wrong to presume these things about him, but it was hard to overlook. For all she knew, maybe there was someone in his life, someone that was kept on the downlow. If that were the case, they hadn’t bothered to make their presence known at the games this weekend. Not that she’d been able to tell. Maybe Alec preferred to keep his personal life private, but she didn’t believe that either. She wouldn’t put it past him to have a woman on each arm if he knew he could get by with it.

Camryn, you’re wrong for thinking that about him, she said to herself as she took her seat in the rear of the plane. And it’s not fair to assume. You don’t even know the guy.

Slipping the horseshoe-shaped pillow behind her neck, she gave up thinking she’d see him and closed her eyes.

Chapter Five

Rather than order room service the next morning, Camryn decided to grab something from the coffee shop in the hotel’s lobby. She’d spotted it when she’d checked in just after midnight. Hopefully, they’d still have plenty of breakfast items to select from considering it was already mid-morning.

Standing in line behind several guests, she stared up at the menu contemplating what she was going to order.

“The ham and cheese omelette is really good,” a voice said from behind her.

Camryn jerked her head around to find Alec Rodgers standing a couple steps away. “Morning,” she said and brought her hand up to smooth her hair. She hadn’t bothered to shower yet and she hoped he didn’t notice her unkempt appearance.

“They also have some pretty tasty bagels too. Blueberry is my favorite.” Alec sure was talkative this time of the morning.

“Thanks for the recommendations,” she said and turned back around, unaware of the space that was now between her and the next patron.

“Are you eating here or headed back to your room?” he asked and sidled up beside her.

“Alec, you can’t cut the line like that,” Camryn spoke up and offered an apologetic look to the few people that had been between them.

“They didn’t mind,” he said grinning. “Especially when I told them you were my wife and were waiting for me.”

Wife? Did he really tell them they were married? Camryn rolled her eyes. “No, you didn’t. Please tell me you’re making this up.”

“Sure, I did,” he said and slipped his arm around her waist. “Thought it was pretty smart on my part.”

Camryn felt her face redden. “Oh, God, I really don’t know this guy,” she mumbled, too low for anyone to hear though.

“Relax, no one cares.”

Camryn tried her best to ignore him, but she couldn’t deny the excitement she felt from Alec being so close.

When it was her turn to order, she told the barista how she’d like her coffee then decided to go with a raspberry crumble muffin at the last minute.

“Hmm, that sounds pretty good. I’ll have the same,” Alec said and stepped in front of her, his room key in his hand for the charge to be billed to.

“I’ve got it,” Camryn said, pulling out her own card since the league was taking care of her expenses.

“I insist,” he said and pulled a couple napkins from the dispenser next to the register. “Oh, and can you add an orange juice too. Gotta have that daily dose of Vitamin C.”

Camryn shook her head. Alec was always trying to be funny, whether the situation called for it or not. She made her way over to a corner table and took a seat in the metal chair. While she hadn’t planned on eating in the coffee shop, Alec hadn’t given her much choice. There’s no way she’d invite him back to her room.
