“I’ll be there. Mind if—” he paused just as he was about to ask if Camryn could join them. Maybe that wasn’t such a clever idea after all.

“Ms. Camryn,” Steven nodded as he acknowledged her then tossed a towel over his shoulder.

Uncertain how she should react, she did her best to act as casual as she could despite feeling like everyone around them knew what was going on. “Alec, make sure you ice that arm tonight. I’ll look at it in the morning if it’s still bothering you,” she said and used the opportunity to make a quick getaway.

She couldn’t help but to smile as she walked towards the elevators.

This time, she wasn’t the one being put on the spot, and she loved it!

She was surprised to find she had a message on her phone when she got back to her room. Apparently, there were quite a few people getting together tonight and Marcus wanted to invite her to come along.

Though she’d really wanted to spend a quiet evening alone, she also wanted to tag along just so she could see how Alec acted when he was amongst his teammates. As well as, to know if he carried on with other people like he did with her.

She knew that Alec was off-limits, but there wasn’t any harm playing her own game, was there?

Alec spotted her the moment she walked into the hotel restaurant with Marcus. She prayed no one saw him wink at her, especially no one in the group she was with. How they’d gone from being short and snippy with one another in the beginning to casually flirting was a complete mystery.

Rather than sit with her back to him, she took the spot at the end of the table. Quite a few people separated them, but she could see every move that he made, including the one where he leaned back in his chair and opened his legs wide. The position wasn’t an uncommon one for guys to sit in, but when he’d casually dropped his hand down and brushed it against the inside of his leg, she had to wonder if he were doing it on purpose or if she’d been the cause of something else, something that had made him hot and bothered. After seeing him do it a second and then a third time, she was confident impure thoughts about her were running rampant in his head. Little did he know, when she crossed her legs, he was the reason a pool of moisture had collected in her panties.

This behavior was so unlike her, but it was fun.

The two of them continued to flirt with one another from across the room, and so far, no one seemed to catch on to their playful gestures. The most thrilling part was when he brushed up against her the moment she stepped out of the women’s bathroom.

“Oh, I’m sorry, ma’am,” he teased and trailed his fingers across her backside. “I didn’t see you standing there.”

She froze when he was so close, she could feel his warm breath against her neck. “Alec, we—” she said, her breath hitching in her throat.

“We’re not doing anything wrong.”

He walked away then headed out the door and into the hotel lobby.

Aggravated that she still needed to take care of her meal ticket, she let out a deep sigh before returning to the table where the others were waiting for her to join in on the trivia game they’d started.

Trivia? Really? Trivia was the last thing she wanted to take part in right now, but how could she tell them no?

By the time she made it back to her room, it was well after midnight. She looked down the hallway for some sign of Alec, in case he’d waited up for her, but there was nothing indicating he was around.

The next few days she saw very little of Alec. Other than the time she’d dedicated before the start of the game taking care of his cut, there wasn’t much they could do to spend time together.

It didn’t help that the Sharks hadn’t been able to hold onto their leads in the first two games of the series either.

Determined not to lose the third and final game in the series, the coach called for an early practice that morning. Camryn stood just inside the dugout, observing Alec as much as she could without being too obvious. From the way he swung the bat to the way he ran the bases, she couldn’t help but wonder what he was like away from the field.

Later that night, with the Sharks leading by two runs, Alec stepped up to the plate. Folding her hands together, she brought them up to her chin as she anxiously waited for him to swing the bat. An uneasy feeling suddenly washed over her, and she stood up from the table hoping the feeling would quickly subside.

Unable to take her eyes from the screen, she watched as the ball left the pitcher’s hand headed towards the plate. It all happened so quickly Alec barely had time to react.

The moment he fell to the ground in a crumpled heap, Camryn knew it was bad. She quickly ran from the medical room, followed by Marcus and several other staff members. She didn’t care if she was allowed to or not, Alec was her utmost concern.

She didn’t stop until she was beside him at the plate. Blood covered both his hands and she gasped as soon as she saw it.

“Alec, oh my God,” she cried out and placed her hand on the back of his neck. “Alec, say something, please.”

The stadium became eerily quiet as everyone waited for the outcome of his injury.

The coaches managed to get him to his knees, but an ungodly amount of blood continued to pour from his nose and mouth. Unable to say anything, she felt his hand tighten around hers.

“I’m right here. I’m right here with you,” she said as she fought to keep the tears from streaming down her face.
