“Wait, is that Chase Harrison? All the other majorettes have been talking about him. Lindsey has a poster of him in her locker room. Now I see why. You better snatch him up before some else does.” She jumped up.

I pulled her back. “I can’t. I’m not the same person I used to be. He’s actually come into the coffee shop a few times. He didn’t even notice me.”

Rosie growled.

“What?”

Recapping hurtful memories sucked major ass.

“Get your ass up. That is unacceptable. He doesn’t even deserve you. Que el cielo me ayude. Que Diós esté conmigo. Ese chico morirá.”

Chase took a step toward us.

I clamped my palm over Rosie’s mouth. “Stop. I’m not ready to face him. Not yet.”

She bit my hand. “Fine.”

Chapter 6

Meghan

I’d avoided running into Chase all summer. With just one more week before class, I busted my ass to pick-up every shift at the coffee shop I could find.

Five, ten, fifteen, twenty–I counted the tip money I’d been stuffing into a mason jar Lucy gave me. I’d already bought all the books I needed for the semester. I met all of my needs and there was still some cash left over.

When I was a kid, my parents and I went school shopping the weekend before school. I loved trying on new clothes and picking new outfits. Mom had sent me on my own for the last several years. This year I wouldn’t go at all. I had to save my money in case mom ever followed through with shutting off my phone. Plus, I needed to find a big way to say thank you to Rosie.

She was my person, and she’d done so much for me. How would I ever repay her?

“Let’s spend the day at the mall in Savannah,” Rosie asked from the kitchen.

With what money?

“Can’t. I have a shift. Suzie would kill me if I called out.” I lied.

“Wrong answer, chica. I already talked to Aunt Suzie and I know you have the day off.” She handed me a bagel with cream cheese.

She probably didn’t notice that I added some groceries to the fridge last week. Just a few, what I could afford.

“We’re leaving in ten minutes. Get ready fast.” She took a sip of coffee.

It had been a few months since I walked through a mall. The last time I was there, someone stole a bunch of shit right in front of the clerk, and then tried to blame me for it. Happy ending– I punched him in the nose. The clerk gave me a high five and a free candle.

I lumbered to the bathroom to get ready.

“Times up!” Rosie stuck her head inside my room.

I’d only just started my foundation. The art of my disguise took time. I grabbed my bag. “Mind if I finish in the car?”

“Nope.” She grabbed her keys and wallet. I followed her out the door.

She locked the deadbolt and triple check the knob.

When I looked at her puzzled, she explained, “Have you noticed there’s been a creepy car parked on the street lately? Usually there is a tall, skinny guy in the driver’s seat. Sometimes there’s a lady with him.” I checked the street but noticed nothing unusual.

“If you see them again, call the cops!” Was it my mother and her wolf? They’d terrified me before. I’d spent hours wondering and when they would show up and ruin everything that I’d worked for.

Maybe it was all in my head.
