“Sorry, Mom, what was that?”

“I said, I’m taking your father away for a dirty weekend of sorts…”

“Mom, TMI, eww.”

Everyone laughs as she buries her head in her hands over her plate.

“The point is, sweetheart, the house is all yours for a night. I tried for more but with the season in full swing, taking him away for more than an hour was a push at best.”

Paris spins in my direction. I can feel her excitement and hear the cogs turning over in her head as I stare at the food in front of me, pretending not to listen.

“No parties,” Coach tells her, and she shakes her head adamantly.

“I have a paper due next week, I’ll be in all weekend. Studying.” She squeezes my knee under the table, making me jump and knock my fork to the floor.

“Settle down, son. The mention of study a sensitive topic for you, is it?” Coach chuckles as I retrieve my missing cutlery. “I was under the impression your grades were near perfect.”

“Yes, sir. They are. I just remembered I have a paper due the end of next week too, is all.”

After passing on the dessert due to our hectic training and game schedule, I assist Paris with the clean-up and thank Elaine for her hospitality. I’m suddenly keen for the weekend. With a game on Friday night, I’m free as an eagle to spend Saturday with Paris. Finally, some alone time.

Paris

“Wait up,” I whisper yell as I run out of the house.

“Babe, it’s cold out. What are you doing?”

I offer him the container of leftovers Mom prepared. “It’s okay. Mom wanted me to give you this.”

He raises an eyebrow at me. “Should umm, I be worried about your mom? She was a little strange tonight, and now she’s sending me home with a packed lunch.”

Paris giggles. “Get over yourself. She knows that we’ve been…umm, hanging out.”

His eyes shoot open in fear. “How the hell does she know that?”

It baffled me too at first, but I explain what she said to me. “She’s a mom. Moms know these things.” I shrug. “Apparently they have a sixth sense about this stuff.”

Magik takes my hand in his. “And she’s okay with it?”

I grin and extend on my tiptoes to kiss him. “One hundred percent on board.”

“One down, one to go.” He chuckles.

“I think she wanted me to give you this mostly as an excuse for me to run out here and say goodbye in private. But I better get back before Dad catches on and pokes his nosey head outside looking for me.”

“So, Saturday then?” He grins, kissing me goodnight.

“I’ll text you when they leave. Pack a bag.”

Smiling, I blow him a kiss as I run back up the drive and watch as he leaves.

“You’re welcome,” Mom whispers from behind me.

Laughing, I hug her tight. “Thanks, Mom, you’re the best.”

“Oh, I know,” she agrees happily. “I do remember what it’s like to be your age. It’s not that long ago really.”

Mom is only eight years younger than dad although she loves to pretend, she’s more youthful than she is. With them having met at college too, I guess she really does understand.
