As days went by and practicing with Chase became the norm, we both saw improvement. His heart was in the game, but his head wasn’t. He needed a few reminders for the skills he already had.

I was getting better too. The touch of a football lit a spark I doused long ago. Slowly, my passion and my fire was coming back to me.

“So, finance?” Chase asked, taking a sip of water.

“Good way to get out of a rough situation I suppose.” I shrugged.

“Tell me about?” He emptied the bottle and tossed it on the ground.

“Maybe someday.” I tossed another ball at his chest. He ran into position.

The practices gave us time together to learn more about each other. To inch my way back in his heart. He already had mine. He always had.

When we ran through plays and threw the ball, it was just like the old days. We even started running together. He couldn’t believe I was able to keep up with his speeds, even when he sprinted.

His little touches started with a tap on the shoulder then a side hug. The moment he placed his palm on the center of my back, I nearly lost every drop of control. I wanted to tell him right then and there who I really was. Would that matter? I stopped myself. At the end of the day, it was unclear what I meant to him.

A friend? A coach? What could we become?

I threw the last play of the day, forcing all of my strength into the ball. He caught it with the side of his body. That’s going to hurt.

He ran from the end of the field to the bleachers. “That was a rough one.”

I tossed him towel. He wiped his sweat covered face. I licked my lips, eager to taste him. The frustration built between my legs. He took a step forward.

“There’s a party for the team this weekend.” His voice was low and sultry. “Will you come with me?” He asked against my ear. A surge vibrated through my belly.

“Like a date?” Please say yes.

“As my date.” The chemistry between us was fierce. I took a step into him. He placed his hands on my shoulder, blocking my embrace. Every time one of us took a step closer the other pushed back. He wanted me. I could smell it. I could see it when he wore his gray sweatpants...

Still, he wouldn’t let me in. Not all the way.

“Fine. I’ll go with you on one condition.” I looked into his eyes.

“Anything.” He dropped his hands.

“Win the game on Saturday first.” I planted a chaste kiss on his cheek.

He paused, stunned by my kiss.

“Okay, let’s bargain. I’ll win if you come,” He said, and my core tightened. One word was all it took.

I’ll come for you.

A beat passed between us.

“Actually–” I tucked my hair behind my ear. “I don’t have a ticket.” Even if I wanted to go, I couldn’t afford it. I needed to save up funds to hopefully buy a car before the new semester began.

“No problem. I had a plan for that response.” Chase pulled a ticket out of his bag and handed it to me.

“What, no jersey with your name on it? I’m disappointed you don’t want to stake your claim.” I winked at him. I took the ticket, but I still had a big choice to make.

Face my biggest fears for the man I loved or stay home and lose it all.
