My heart fluttered.

She was going to tell him. I could feel it. Sense it. The end was near.

“Mom.” He shook his head softly, as if to say “don’t bring her into this,” or “don’t ruin this for me.”

She pulled me in for a hug. “Either he knows and is too terrified to talk to you about it, or he’s a complete idiot and I apologize on behalf of my son,” she whispered.

“So, are you two dating?” She asked when she pulled away.

Chase stuttered a few mindless sounds, unable to form a complete thought.

“No.” I rescued him. “But he has asked me out. I told him he had to win today’s game to get the answer.”

“Well. He won the game. Tell us all.” Her eyes grew wider.

No one cared we were standing in the middle of the walkway. Most people mindlessly shuffled around us.

“Yes. You can have one date. Don’t blow it.” I was going to say yes, whether or not he won the game.

Chapter 13

Meghan

“Welcome to the party of the century, brother,” one of Chase’s teammates greeted him with one of those awkward manly side high fives.

I was out of my league. Couples were grinding against each other to gangster rap. A group of jersey chasers surrounded two of the guys I recognized from the defensive line.

The entire cheer team paraded down the staircase, dressed in their uniforms. It wasn’t even game day. Did they fucking sleep in their skirts and halter tops? Or did they get dolled up just for the party?

I didn’t belong in a fraternity house. Another gaggle of bimbos in mini-skirts and low cut t-shirts huddled around the bar. Even an idiot would notice the stark difference between them and me.

Rosie and I spent hours combing through my closet for the perfect outfit. She convinced me to wear her black skinny jeans, which were way out of my comfort zone. The white lacey long sleeve shirt, however, was something I loved to wear… when I paired it with a coat or my favorite hoodie. Instead, I paired it with one of my lacey outerwear corsets. It’s more exposed than I’ve ever let myself be. Yet there I was, dressed up for a “date” with Chase.

Our night together wouldn’t be the intimate evening I had imagined, more like disaster waiting to happen.

Two girls walked up to Chase.

“Hey Harrison.”

“That was a beautiful pass.” They reminded me of Olivia’s minions back in middle school, batting their eyes exactly the same way. They probably added a little extra lipstick and pulled up their bra before walking over.

Girls would get so much more attention from guys if they didn’t try as hard to beg for it.

“Thanks.” Is he fucking blushing?

The situation wasn’t right.

I had made a massive mistake. When Chase picked me up, I was ecstatic.

“You look beautiful,” he had said less than an hour ago.

He kissed my forehead, and I was confident. Nothing could ruin that moment. As soon as the raging music hit my ears, I realized I was wrong.

My confidence melted away.

While conversation distracted Chase, I darted for the door.

“Leaving so soon?” Tweedle Dick called from behind. It wasn’t a friendly question. There was something taunting in the tone.
