“Pardon?” His hand left one of my shoulders and pointed at my chest.

“You missed a button.”

I blinked and looked down to see I was indeed giving him a good show. My lacy black bra was on display from above, and he took full advantage of his viewpoint.

“Thanks.” I pushed the pearl button through the tiny hole. “Silk and pearls aren’t always a good idea.” I blushed and looked up at him and found him staring like he was trying to read my mind again. “Are you good?”

His fingers moved away, and he ran a hand through his short brown hair.

“Yeah, I’m good.” He grinned.

“Well, now I’m really late.”

“Me too.” He stepped back. “See you later.”

I smiled and made my way down the stairs but not before looking over my shoulder to find him watching me. Jesus, his intense stare stirred something deep inside me.

I spotted my uncle and Frank deep in conversation.

Cole had asked to be involved, so we all joined him in his office. Frank sat the speaker phone in the center of the table.

“Are you ready, Ivy?” Frank asked before he dialed.

No.

I nodded.

“And you understand what this means?”

I don’t want to do this.

I nodded.

“This will ignite him to the max.” Frank looked at my uncle, who looked at me.

I never asked for this.

“But you know that by law we have to do this.”

Run, Ivy.

I nodded.

He nodded back at me and started to dial. My eyes stayed glued to the table as it rang. Each ring pulled me farther and farther away from the confidence I had built since I arrived here.

“Hi, Frank.” The voice was harsh and all business. “Is she ready?”

I became stone, muscles locked in place. My fingers dug into my palms with the need to feel something other than sheer panic.

“Ivy?” My uncle moved to sit next to me. “It’s okay. You’re safe here.”

“You have my word on that,” Cole said from somewhere in the room.

Just tell them what happened, then you can get out of this room.

“I’m ready,” I barely whispered as the walls of the room seemed to get closer. Ever so slowly, I opened the door to that memory.
