“Sure thing, boss.” Filippo quickly turned and headed in that direction. When we stopped, I waited for Alejandro to step out first, then he waited for me to exit.

“We’ll park across the street.”

“Good.” I walked to the door, dropped the wad of cash from my last job in the donation box at the entrance, and disappeared into the chapel. I needed to pray.

Ivy

The mood in the house was strange that evening, almost dark. I knew Frank had held a meeting earlier that day about the girls who were murdered in Mexico. He had information from one of his informants on what went down. The Cartel were ruthless, and the more I heard about what the guys dealt with, the more I was nervous about the idea of them leaving again. I had no idea when their next mission would be, and the unknown played on me. I just couldn’t get how they did it.

Savannah assured me that the guys were carrying a lot and that on days like that everyone just laid low and processed. I guessed it made sense. The house that seemed to be so upbeat and free had a different side to it. Days of down and outs.

I hadn’t seen Ty all day. I knew he was struggling, and the fixer in me wanted to help. I also wanted answers and hated that I hadn’t gotten any yet. The sex had been great, and even last night had its moments. I knew if we’d been alone, I probably wouldn’t have been able to stop myself.

Ty and I had a strong pull for one another; there was no dismissing that. But now my mind needed satisfaction as well.

I sank myself into my notes but soon found I couldn’t focus for long, so I got up.

“Hey,” I whispered softly to my uncle, whose gaze stared out the window over the top of his laptop. He was deep in thought. “Do you mind if I come in?”

“Of course.” He removed his glasses and closed his laptop. “What’s on your mind?”

“I’m feeling badly for Keith.” I sat on the couch and picked at the corner of the pillow. “He took the kids for the weekend to let them know about their mother.”

“Yes, that won’t be an easy time for any of them.” He glanced at his phone then slowly turned it over.

“Is everything okay?” I nodded at it.

“Yes,” he smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes, “just waiting on a call.”

“Shouldn’t it be turned upward, then?”

“Have you spoken to Ty since last night?” He caught me off guard.

“No, I haven’t seen him today at all.”

“He’s in a very dark place, Ivy. I urge you to tread lightly.”

“Meaning?” I waited for him to go on.

“Meaning be careful with him. He’s holding a very tight rein on a lot of anger, and though I believe he’s fit to continue in the field, I sincerely believe he’s not in the right frame of mind for anything else.” He gave me a strange look.

“Uncle Reid, if you have something to say, say it.”

“Dating someone in this house isn’t easy.”

What the hell does my uncle know about Ty and me?

“You should know.” I raised my chin, and he shifted in his seat. “Look,” I took a breath and tried to lower my defenses, “I know you’re only looking out for me. You’re basically my father, and I know I’ve got a lot going on right now personally, too.” He nodded at that. “But Ty and I are just blowing off some steam together. I’m not looking for marriage. I’m looking for a friggin’ distraction so I can take a breath without shaking as I exhale.”

“Are you sleeping?”

“With him?” I blurted and then wished I hadn’t.

“That was not at all what I meant, Ivy.” He shook his head. “I meant through the night.”

“Mostly,” I lied, and he narrowed his gaze on me. “A few hours here and there. I’m functioning, so I’ll take that as a win.”

“Maybe it’s time to take something for that.”
