“Hey,” he waved me in a different direction, “got a minute?”

“Sure.”

We walked together toward the building we used to tack up before our missions. He typed in the password, the door clicked open, and we stepped inside. I dropped my rucksack in the corner and turned to see him looking out the door. I wiped the water off my face with a rag, thankful to be out of the rain.

“Okay,” he rested his hands on his hips, “so, one thing we’re taught in the military is it’s black or white, right? There’s no stepping into the gray. We do our job by the book, and if something happens, we know we’ll face a mountain of paperwork, interviews, and a lot of shit. No one wants that, so we hope we never waver from the line.”

“Correct.” I nodded, beyond curious to see where this was going.

“But when we’re here,” he waved a hand, “we’re not under the same rules as before. We’re under Frank’s command. He turns his head, from time to time, so we’re able to tilt the scale when there’s a need.” He paused. “I don’t know much about what happened to you in Afghanistan, Ty, but I do know something about a brother who’s in a struggle to right a wrong.”

“I’m listening.”

“So, I’ve got a guy.” I grinned at that, and he saw the humor and grinned back then went on. “Yeah, so, I got a guy—a friend, really—who can track down people, dig up info, or even make someone disappear in the right circumstance. He’s good people. He just got handed a different direction in life, and because of his past, he took it.”

Interesting. I thought for a moment and saw Mike shift as he eyeballed my reaction. I could tell it took a lot for him to tell me about this guy. He didn’t know me all that well. Being brothers in arms meant a lot, and I appreciated his candor.

“And you trust him?”

“I do. Always have. He’s helped a few of us out before. Sometimes you just need to step into the gray to make things right, and this guy knows all about that.”

“Okay.” I chewed my cheek as I thought, and he sensed my hesitation.

“Savannah knows him and knows his wife too. If you have any concerns, you can talk to her. You know she’ll give it to you straight.” We both grinned at that. It was a true statement if there ever was one.

“And what would this guy want in return?”

“He’s not like that.” He shook his head. “If things didn’t turn south for him, he’d be here as one of us. I’m sure of it.”

“What’s his name?”

“Trigger.” He rubbed his head. “He’s the Pres of the Devil’s Reach MC in Cali.”

“Motorcycle gang?” I narrowed my eyes at him.

“Yeah, he prefers club, but one hundred percent.”

Really? So, that’s what the wives were talking about!

“You do have some impressive hookups.”

“You need to in this line of work.” He checked his watch.

“I’m starting to see that.” I grabbed my rucksack, as we had to get going if we were to be ready in time. “Thanks, Mike. I’ll see what I can do first, but I’ll let you know if I need to go there.”

“Anytime.” We stepped out into the rain and raced toward the house.

“Savi?” I heard Sloane’s voice. It sounded almost dreamy.

“Mm,” she moaned back softly.

“If I ever question girls’ day out, remind me of this moment right here where mud smothered areas I didn’t even know I had.” Both Savi and Sloane chuckled in agreement.

“I promise.” She sighed in happiness. “Speaking of smothered areas…”

“Smooth, Savi.” Sloane laughed harder.
