“And what, Dad thought Trigger killed him?”

“No, but we think Trigger knows who did.”

“And does he?”

“He gave us a name.”

“And?” She waited, and I cleared my throat. “Simon come on.”

“We’re waiting to see if the information matches.”

“If Trigger told you who it was, then that’s who it was. He doesn’t fuck around like that.”

“Let’s hope.”

“And if this information doesn’t match up? And match up with what?” She scrunched up her face.

“That’s not for me to answer, Kenna. That’s up to your father.”

“So, this Castillo drug guy is dead, and you can’t find the man who did it.” She chewed her lip. “So now dad has no way to protect his client? Is this client someone big?”

“Let’s not go there.”

“No, let’s.” She held my gaze, and I felt a crackle of electricity and knew she wasn’t going to let it go. “I can handle it, Simon.”

“I believe you, but it’s more that your father wouldn’t want you to know.”

“Don’t underestimate me. I’m more his daughter than you know.”

“Perhaps you are,” I huffed. I decided I’d already let her in, and it would be better to have Kenna on my side, as I’d begun to realize she might make a formidable enemy. “Let’s just say, if a guy named Luis Aguilar killed Martin Castillo, then your father can point the focus there. If he can’t, retaliation could sting.”

“Sting or kill?”

“We won’t let anything happen to Cameron,” I assured her.

“The one and only time he lost a case, we had a few visitors and they never left,” she muttered. “I hate to think who might visit this time.”

“It’ll be okay. We just need some answers and quick.” I hoped maybe she would keep her eyes open and see what she could dig up from her people.

“Just keep this between us, please.”

“Of course.” She tipped the glass to her pink lips again and downed more than half of the ruby liquid. She sat back and mulled over what I’d told her. While she was deep in thought, I watched her and found myself curious where her mind took her.

“May I offer you a little advice?” I figured I’d step over a line again since that’s what we’d already done.

“I’m listening.”

“Be careful who you surround yourself with. Not all around you are trustworthy.”

“I know you guys don’t trust the Devil’s Reach?—”

“I’m not referring to the motorcycle club, Kenna.”

“Then who?”

I swung my gaze toward Leo and Grim, who were on the edge of the room talking. They both looked fit to kill. I studied her as she watched them as well and wondered if it was Grim’s handiwork on her neck. I doubted it, though. They seemed like oil and vinegar.

“Grim Gates is the least of my worries.” She seemed a million miles away.
