“And I’ll always have yours.” She straightened her spine. “I appreciate the offer, Trigger, but I’ve got everything handled.”

“Babe,” Minnie pleaded again, and I got she knew more than she let on.

“Okay, Trigger, I do need your help.” Kenna cleared her throat. “I need you, all of you, to let this go, for,” she swallowed hard, “for me.”

“Okay.” Morgan, who must have slipped in the room, raised his hands and glanced at Kenna. She looked relieved to see him. “I think we all could use some fuckin’ space. I, for one, am sweatin’ my balls off and could really use a drink and a lap dance.”

“Well, we don’t have a ton to go on anyway, Grim.” Tess switched gears. “You don’t need a key card to open the viewing door. You’d only need one to open that one.” She pointed to the door that led into the pleasure room. “He obviously didn’t swipe his card to make a bid. He just watched. Me and Brick can scan the footage again to see if we can see him anywhere else. Try to pinpoint the prick.”

“I’ll go talk to the hostess.” Brick rushed out.

“I’ll call you later.” Kenna squeezed Minnie’s arm as she left the room.

“Minnie?” Trigger had waited till Kenna was gone. “The fuck you know?”

“Nope,” she raised her hands to show she wouldn’t talk about it, “I won’t lose her over this.”

“How bad is it?” I hoped she’d at least share something.

“From the part I do know, bad enough. Kenna tells me everything, but this, whatever it is, she wants me far from it. Lips sealed and all that.”

“Fuck.” I rubbed my jaw and wished I could just beat it out of her.

“Grim,” she stepped close, “please be careful with Kenna on this one. I’ve never seen her so closed-mouthed. She disconnects whenever I try to bring it up. She’s never done that before.”

“Yeah.” I looked away and tried to tell myself I would be.

Kenna

You seem off, Kenna.” My mother reached for my arm. Her gold bangles clinked as she attempted to soothe me. “What’s going on?”

“Did you ever do something for the right reason but knew the consequences of anyone finding out could crumble your entire world and those around you?” Mom looked a little taken back but thought for a moment.

“That’s a heavy question.”

“It is.”

“You know who deals with heavy all day long?” She gave me a shrug, and I shook my head.

“Dad has a lot going on.”

“He always has time for you girls.”

“No, he always has time for Calli.” I dropped my head into my hands. I didn’t care I’d probably smudge the lenses of my new sunglasses.

“You know he loves you both, Kenna. It’s all in your delivery.” She tossed her long, gorgeous hair over her slim shoulder. “You and your father are just too alike. You’re both stubborn and don’t back down. If he knew you were struggling with something and wanted advice, he’d be there for you. Just leave your defenses at the door and let him in.”

Maybe there was a time we’d been close, now there were times I hardly recognized him. Besides, I needed my father far away from this situation. Things were fucked up enough as it was.

“Easier said than done,” I scoffed. My father wasn’t an easy man to deal with at the best of times. I guessed that was why he was one of the best lawyers around. I only wished I agreed with Mom, but the truth was he wouldn’t be there for me, especially on this. No, this would send my father off the deep end. I had to take this secret to the grave.

“I ran into Laurel Gates this morning, and she told me you were impressive in the meeting. Held your own and got what you wanted.”

“I did.” I smiled and remembered how good it felt.

“I also heard that Grim is back for good.”

“Yup, he came in like a bull in a china shop.”
