“Kenna,” his tone made me hyperaware, and I saw he looked stressed—more stressed than normal, “I need a meeting with Trigger.”

“What?” I nearly choked on my own saliva. That sure wasn’t where I thought this conversation would go.

“I’m in trouble, Kenna.”

So am I. I knew I could never talk to him about it.

“I need you to set up a meeting for me.”

“With Trigger?” I couldn’t keep the shock from my voice.

“Yes, and it can’t come from me. I need to keep it quiet.” He sniffed and rubbed his nose. I knew he always did that when he was hiding something.

“I’m really not comfortable with asking him, Dad.”

“Sometimes we all have to do things that make us uncomfortable, Kenna. You’ll do this for me.”

“No, Dad, you don’t get it.” I stood straight. “In all these years of knowing the Devil’s Reach, I’ve never asked for a favor.”

“Aren’t they your friends?”

“Yes, and I intend to keep it that way.”

“Friends help out friends in a time of need.” He looked at his watch. “Nine a.m. tomorrow.” He took a firm grip on the top of my arm as he leaned down so his face was close to mine. “I need this, Kenna, so don’t disappoint me.” Anger shot from his eyes.

My mouth opened, but nothing came out. Shit.

I watched him go back into the restaurant then whirled around to take a deep breath. My mind spun as I contemplated a hundred different ways around this. Immediately, my head thought of Morgan. Maybe I could ask him instead?

“Kenna?” I turned to see Simon with his hands in his front pockets looking uncomfortable. “I’m sure I’m the last person you want to see right now.”

“That’s not true.” I sighed, feeling bad for the guy. I was sure my father wasn’t easy to work so closely with. “Are you here to tell me to speak with Trigger? Dad already scooped you on that.”

“He told you?” He visibly relaxed and came closer.

“Yes, he told me all right.”

“Oh, yes,” he scrunched his nose, “the famous Tame temper.”

“That’d be it.” I tucked my hair behind my ear. “Am I to guess it has something to do with a client?”

“Yeah.” He nodded then looked over. “It’s ugly, Kenna. Not sure how he’s going to get out of this one.” He let out a long breath. “I know it’s a big deal, and it’s on super short notice, but he could really use Trigger’s help.”

“It’s unusual for Dad. He doesn’t even give Trigger or his people the time of day. Why now? What good is it to get Trigger involved?” Suddenly, I knew why, Trigger knew almost everything going on in this town, at least on the darker side of things, and when he wanted to find out something, he’d find it.

“I see you know why, because you just thought it.” He smiled, and I smiled back as I realized he was good at reading people. We stood in silence and watched the people in the restaurant eat and chat.

“Look. Kenna, I know you don’t know much about me, only that I’m the guy in the background at some of your family gatherings. I appreciate being included because I don’t have any family to do that stuff with, and your dad knows that. It’s nice of him to think of it.”

“I appreciate the buffer you bring.” I chuckled darkly.

“Glad to be of service,” he snorted slightly as he leaned toward the railing and looked over at the other balcony. Grim, the woman he was with, and Leo all laughed as someone must have made a joke.

“I’m sure it can’t be easy working for a man like my father.”

“It has its challenges,” he grimaced, “but he’s good at what he does.”

“Mm,” I mumbled.
