“Okay,” she took a deep breath and closed her eyes, “make all my dreams come true and tell me it was Grim.”

“That be the one.”

“God damn, that’s a good visual!” She shouted and put her hand to her heart. Everyone in the coffee shop looked at us. “My girl just got clam slammed.”

“Wow,” I laughed behind my cup.

“So, tell me, then, are the rumors true? Does he play for the big leagues? Louisville slugger? Bauer goalie stick?” She beamed her joy at me.

“Why do you think I want a rubber donut to sit on?” I smirked, and she flopped her head into her hands.

“So,” she jammed a cinnamon roll into her mouth, “what does this mean?”

“What do you mean?”

“Are you guys dating?”

“Ha!” I laughed loudly at the sheer idea of it. “No, it means we were both running off no sleep, adrenaline, and weed. We finally both got pissed enough at each other we gave in to take the edge off. You must know that feeling.”

“I mean, I do, but it ended with me dating Brick.”

“And I’m very happy for the two of you, but Grim and I are like light and dark. We can’t co-exist in the same place.”

“But the sex is good?”

“The sex is great.” I nodded.

“And you’ll do it again?”

“I won’t say I won’t, but from what I understand, there’s another girl in the picture. So, I’ll tread carefully.”

“Who?”

“Her name’s Jenelle.”

“That twat-waffle!” Minnie rolled her eyes.

“You know her?”

“Not really, but Brick does, and he told me she’s been after Grim forever. I thought she gave up hope when he first left for Mexico, but clearly, she’s still circling.”

“So, they have a history?”

“Yes,” she popped another piece of pastry in her mouth then looked up at me, “but that doesn’t mean shit, Kenna. No ring means game on. So, if you like a good munch-a-lunch, you don’t back down.”

“There are plenty of ladies who have their eye on him?—”

“Just like there are plenty of men who have their eye on you,” she reminded me. “If you’re having fun with Grim, then have fun, but hey, maybe that big heart of yours will finally let someone in.”

“That thing is locked up so tight, I’m not even sure if it beats anymore.”

“Raymond really did a number on you.”

I looked away as I forced myself to block the memory.

“He left a couple scars, not that he can ever know.”

“You know I wouldn’t.” She patted my hand and pretended to lock her lips and throw away a key. “I’m sorry he cheated on you, in your bed, on your birthday, with a friend.” She shrugged.
