“Tomorrow?” Her voice pitches hopefully.

And I can’t help a soft laugh. “Yes. Tomorrow.”

“Okay. Love you, Ray-Ray.”

“Love you, too, Mom.” I pass the phone back to Mikayla. “Thanks.”

“You seriously left your phone in a truck stop?” Her eyes bulge.

“Yes.” I nod, avoiding her gaze. “I wasn’t thinking clearly, okay?”

“Fair enough.” She lets me off with a grin, and then the pizza arrives.

It’s the perfect distraction, and I inhale three slices before Mick gives me a serious look.

“Hey, this thing with Theo…”

I swallow, wiping the grease off my lips with a napkin.

“Any chance of reconciliation? The whole wanting different things? Were there some deal-breakers in there?”

“Yeah,” I rasp. “Some big ones.”

She gives me a sad smile. “I’m really sorry.”

I shrug.

“What are you gonna do now?”

I shrug again because… I seriously don’t know.

CHAPTER 10

LIAM

It’s been over a day since Rachel told me what those assholes did to her, and it’s still eating me up, gnawing away on my stomach lining. Anger sizzles through me as my brain bounces from images of her on the floor getting kicked and then thrown into a bedroom to the sound of my mother’s whimpers as she begged Dad to calm down.

It’s doing my head in and turning me into a grumpy beast.

I’m aware enough to know how I’m behaving, but I can’t seem to stop myself.

With a grunt, I fly forward on my skates, bodychecking Jason with a hard smash into the boards and fighting for control of the puck. Clearing it, I shoot it toward Ethan while Jason shoves me in the back.

“It’s practice, you fucking moron.”

My gloved hand curls into a fist, and it takes everything in me not to spin and take a swing at our surly captain.

Shit. I have to pull myself together.

But seconds later, when I’m collecting the puck off Casey and get smashed into the boards as payback, I lose it.

“Fuck off, Jas!” I shove him hard, pulling off my gloves and making it clear that I have every intention of making him bleed.

Being the hotheaded jerk-off he is, he immediately loses his gloves, too, and we start tussling on the ice, shouts rising from the rink as the team heads our way to break it up.

Someone’s arm curls around my chest, hauling me back, while Baxter grabs Jason’s shoulder and stops him from lunging at me again.

“What the hell, you idiots!” Coach yells. “Get your asses over here right now!”
