“And you don’t think I won’t if you’re not around?” He stretches his arm, pointing behind him. “You’re walking out here wearing practically nothing. You’re shivering. You have no plan. And you’re expecting me not to worry about you.”

I sniff, wiping my nose with the back of my trembling finger. “I don’t know what to do, okay? I just…” I shake my head, crossing my arms and trying to stop the shivers from working through my entire body. “I want to rid myself of Theo and this fear and this feeling like I’m useless. Like everyone has to fight my battles for me because I’m not strong enough to do anything. Why would you want to be with someone like that? I’m doing you a favor by leaving.”

I close my eyes, not wanting to look at him.

For a second, all that exists is our breathing, my quaking puffs next to his heavy exhales. My heart is thundering, and part of me is expecting to hear a soft “You’re right” just before he walks away.

But then he draws near. His breath brushes the side of my cheek as his strong arms wrap around me.

“You are stronger than you think,” he whispers into my hair. “You left him. You stole his money, and you walked out that door. That makes you strong.”

I’m about to argue that it also makes me a thief, but he keeps talking before I can.

“And I want to be with you because you’re kind and you have a beautiful soul. You’re gentle and sweet, and I love that about you.”

“Gentle and sweet can get my ass kicked.”

“So find your inner boss bitch,” he counters.

I pull back, gazing up at his face. He’s so confident and sure, and I’m just… “What if I don’t have one?”

“You do.” He grins, his eyes sparkling in the early-morning light. “And I’m gonna help you find her.” His lips purse as he looks away from me. But then he lets out this dry laugh and shakes his head. “Shit, I didn’t want to, but… I’m gonna teach you how to fight. Throw a punch, kick some ass. Defend yourself.”

My chest flutters, a sensation I don’t recognize whistling through me.

“You can do that?” Why am I fighting a smile?

“Yeah.” The look on his face tells me it’s not bullshit. I can believe him. Trust him.

That flutter in my chest gets a little stronger. I don’t know what it is, but I like it. And so my smile grows.

Liam brushes his nose across mine. “So… you gonna stay?”

“Yeah.” I breathe the word against his skin.

“Can I take you back to bed now?”

My lips quirk. “Yeah. As long as you promise that we won’t be sleeping.”

“Oh, I can definitely promise you that.” He scoops me into his arms with a growl.

A squeal punches out of me as he starts running. I wrap my legs around his waist, laughing as I cling to his shirt, which I strip off as soon as the door clicks shut behind us.

Throwing me onto the bed, he pulls at my pajama pants, yanking them off my feet while I make quick work of his boxers. Our kisses are fast and ravenous, my wet core aching for him as he sucks my nipple into his mouth, then paints pictures on my skin with his tongue. His fingers circle my clit until I’m a panting mess on the bed.

I reach for his rock-hard shaft, but he stops me, pinning my arms above my head.

“You’re close, cariña.”

“Yes,” I gasp.

“Tell me when,” he murmurs against my mouth, still teasing my clit while an energy made of light and fire expands throughout my body.

I cry out, the start of the build taking over. Light spreads from my core and down my limbs as I curl my fingers around his hand. He squeezes my wrists, sucking the tip of my earlobe between his lips as I groan, “Now. Now, now, now!”

And then just as the orgasm starts to rocket through me, he plunges inside me.

It’s impossible to keep my scream in check. The noise coming out of me is all pleasure as I ride this orgasmic wave with him pumping inside me—sure, slick moves that set a heady rhythm I can barely comprehend.
