No one even knows me here.

I’m safe. Liam is keeping me safe.

I haven’t used any of my credit cards. I’ve bought a new phone.

There’s nothing for me to worry about, right? Theo has no idea where I am. If he did, he would have shown up by now and demanded his money back.

No one’s watching you, Rachel. Just get over yourself.

Hunching my shoulders, I narrow my eyes on the game, trying and failing to follow the puck.

Trying and failing to shake off this chill along the back of my neck.

CHAPTER 32

LIAM

It’s Sunday. The one day of the week I don’t have anything to do. The one day I should be relaxed and happy and lying in bed with my woman, giving her orgasms or drawing lazy pictures on her skin with my fingers.

But nope.

We’re out in the cold, the tip of her nose bright red as she stomps her way down icy streets looking at apartments.

She’s getting colder by the minute, and I’ve quickly learned that a cold Rachel leads to a grumpy Rachel.

I need to stop and get her a hot coffee or something. Anything to warm her up, because this stubborn woman is refusing to call it quits.

It’s pissing me off.

Why does she have to look at apartments today?

Why does she have to look for apartments at all?

I like having her in my bed. I like waking up beside her, her warm, soft body cozying up against mine. It’s my happy place right now.

I usually love it when the air has an icy bite to it. Being out in the snow always makes me feel like I’m home. But Rachel warm in my bed… that’s my new home. And I want to be back there right now.

Shoving my hands into my jacket pockets, I follow Ray and Mick into a building lobby and immediately check out the security. There’s a camera above the line of mailboxes and, from what I can tell, another one pointing at the elevators, which look as though they need a keycard to access. A leasing agent stands there smiling her Colgate smile and cheerfully greeting us.

“Third floor. Apartment B.”

“Thanks,” Rachel murmurs, pressing up against me when we crowd into the small space with another family.

Nothing is said as we ride to the third floor, but we exchange glances and polite smiles.

Rachel’s quiet today. Actually, so is Mick. Probably because Ethan’s not here. He had to go down and help his dad with a plumbing job. He offered to take Mick with him, but she said she’d better stick around and help Ray. I got the look and was silently told by my best friend that I was apartment hunting for the day. Whoopee.

Holding my sigh in check, I try to keep my foul mood under wraps.

I don’t even know why I’m so grumpy.

Yes, you do.

My frown deepens as I step into my fourth apartment for the day and immediately know it’s wrong.

For one, it’s too small. And the layout is totally impractical. The sparse amount of furniture that comes with the apartment looks antiquated, like the owners hit up a few charity stores and bought the cheapest shit they could find. I take one look in the pokey kitchen and start shaking my head.

“It’s in our price range,” Rachel mumbles.
