“No, that won’t be necessary, but I’m sure that’s something you can provide to the police when they get here. By law, we are required to notify them.”

“I’m aware, but Eveline won’t be answering any questions until she’s ready to. If she even wants to. It’s up to her. Something I’ll be telling them when they arrive.” Ox’s protective instinct was kicking in, and he embraced it—even if he didn’t quite understand it.

“Of course, it’s totally up to the patient as to what she wants to do, but we have to follow procedures. I’ll be back in the morning to check on her.” With a nod, the doctor left the room.

Being careful not to disturb Eveline and not wanting to release her hand, Ox hooked the nearby chair with his ankle, dragging it close so he could sit. His gaze traced the bruising, and a new flare of anger swept through him.

Who the fuck did this to her?

And why?

Where did it happen?

It had to have been close to his office if she’d been able to get there. Considering her injuries, the fact she hadn’t passed out prior to reaching his floor was amazing.

“I’ll be back in thirty minutes to wake her and go through the protocols we do when someone has suffered a head injury.”

The nurse that had led him to Eveline’s room was standing in the corner.

He’d forgotten she was there. “Thanks.”

A few seconds later, the door closed behind her, and he was alone with Eveline, the beeping of the heart monitor the only sound in the room.

He gave her hand a squeeze. “You’re safe now, baby. I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”

Chapter Seven

“Ms. Durville. Eveline, can you wake up?” An annoying voice was disrupting the dream Eveline was having.

No, she didn’t want to wake up. What she wanted was to stay sleeping and go back to the dream where she and Kyle were together. Where he was talking to her. Telling her that he would keep her safe.

“Eve, baby, you need to wake up.”

Wait! Is that Kyle?

Maybe she was still dreaming.

There was no way he was going to be anywhere near her.

Other sounds penetrated the fog of sleep, and she was aware of the rhythmic beep beep filling her consciousness. Then the smell. Was that lemon and bleach? Along with the fresh pine scent she associated with Kyle.

Now she was imagining that smell. No way was Kyle in her bedroom.

That beeping wasn’t from her alarm. She also didn’t use lemon or bleach to clean her apartment.

Other things hit her as she became more aware. The throbbing in her head and her arm. Not to mention the way her cheek hurt.

Why was everything hurting?

Eveline tried to lift her hand, but it was anchored down…and warm. So very warm.

“That’s it, baby. Wake up.”

Again, Kyle’s smooth voice sounded, and why was he calling her baby?

“Not a baby,” she mumbled.

A rumble of laughter came from her left side. “I guess you’re not.”
