Page 25 of Keeping Eveline

Anger boiled up from Eveline’s gut, scalding her from the inside out. She wanted to flay Kyle. She was never one to lose her temper, but whenever she was around Kyle Matthews, it seemed as though she was a hair trigger away from blowing her stack.

The fact he was in his kitchen, leaning nonchalantly against the kitchen counter, as if he hadn’t all but kidnapped her did nothing to cool her temper.

“Well? Can you not talk?” she demanded.

The fear that’d consumed her when she’d woken up and for a few seconds hadn’t known where she was had quickly been replaced by anger when she recognized the low timber of his voice as he talked to someone.

Not to mention the room where she’d spent an amazing night. Plus, the sheets smelled like Kyle, his pine scent lingering on the fabric. None of that was helping her keep her equilibrium around him.

How the heck had she not woken up when he’d lifted her from the car and carried her inside?

Because of course, that was what he’d done because she certainly hadn’t walked into his apartment and climbed into his bed.

“You should still be sleeping.” His voice was calm.

“I should. But I woke up and nothing looked familiar, so I got up.”

Kyle nodded, as if her explanation was extremely sensible. “How are you feeling? How’s your head?”

Eveline clenched her fists and counted to ten at his casual questions. “Fine,” she bit out. “Everything’s fine.”

It was partly true, the drumming in her head was a lot quieter now than it’d been when she’d walked out of the hospital. She still felt dirty because she was still wearing her blood-stained clothes. Her cheek ached, and she imagined if she looked in the mirror her face would be a lovely shade of purple with green tinges from her interaction with a brick wall. Lastly, her hair, well that didn’t even bear thinking about how much more of a mess it must be after sleeping in Kyle’s bed.

“Would you like to have a shower?”

Dammit, was the man a mind reader? Or do I really look like something the cat dragged in? I probably smell too.

Showering was high on her list of priorities but first, she wanted answers as to why Kyle had brought her to his place and not taken her to her home. Not to mention, Eveline still didn’t have the answer to so many of her questions about everything that had passed between them during the last twelve or so hours.

The man was the king of avoiding things he didn’t want to talk about. She’d make him talk—eventually. On this particular subject, she was going to hound until she got what she wanted from him.

A thump resounding in her head, reminded her that getting emotional and thinking too much hurt. Maybe she’d deal with all of this after some pain meds and a shower.

Was that a cop out not to question him?

Maybe. Maybe not. Right then, her care factor was bordering on negative infinity—if that was even a thing.

“A shower sounds good, but don’t think I’m letting you off the hook. I still want answers.”

A soft smile curled his lips, and her insides melted a tiny bit.

No matter how he smiled, he had the ability to affect her in ways she shouldn’t let him. He’d made it more than clear that he didn’t want anything to do with her. Yet, here she was standing in his kitchen, after he’d spent the night at the hospital with her, something he hadn’t needed to do.

“I never thought you would. And I’ll give you the answers you want. I’ve got nothing to hide. But first…” Kyle went over to a cupboard and pulled out a glass before filling it. He then grabbed a bottle of pain pills from the drawer and placed them on the counter in front of him. “You look like you need this. I’ll set some things out for you to wear in the master bathroom.”

As he passed by her, his fingers gently brushed her bruised cheek. “Someone is going to pay for this,” he murmured and then left her standing in the kitchen.

Had he really just said that, or had she imagined it?

Why did he sound so lethal?

It wasn’t like she meant anything to him.

Eveline didn’t have the brain space to dissect the way Kyle blew hot and cold, so she snatched up the pills and water.

Everything would be better after she had a shower.

Hopefully.
