Page 28 of Keeping Eveline

Now that she’d had a small taste of caffeine, she was ready to get the answers she’d been seeking.

Everything Kyle had done from the moment she’d collapsed at his feet was in direct contrast to how he’d treated her after he found out who she worked for.

The Kyle sitting opposite her had been caring and attentive. He’d provided her with clothes—which was hoped hadn’t belonged to a former girlfriend because if they had, she’d put her dirty clothes back on.

This Kyle had also called her baby. No one had ever called her baby before. No way was she going to let him know that she kind of liked it.

“I stayed because I didn’t want to leave you. And I didn’t want you to be alone.”

Was that really the reason?

It seemed so simple and yet so out of character for how Kyle had been treating her.

“I don’t believe you.”

He put his mug down on the table. “We’ve already established I don’t lie—unless it’s necessary. What I said is the truth. If you don’t want to believe that then that’s on you not me.”

I don’t lie—unless it’s necessary.

Like lying to say he was her fiancé so that he could stay with her. Eveline should’ve been grateful that he had. How different would it have been to wake up in a hospital room alone? Having no recollection of how she’d gotten there.

There were times when lying was necessary, and she supposed her passing out at his feet was one of the times it had been.

“What about why I’m here and not at my place?” She moved on to the next question. Eveline believed there was more to why he hadn’t left after she’d kicked him out. She would get to the bottom of it—eventually.

“Same reason for me staying at the hospital. I didn’t want you to be alone. You heard the nurse. You needed someone to watch over you. Make sure you didn’t have a reoccurrence of concussion symptoms. Or get faint and pass out again.”

“And lying about being my fiancé?”

“It was the only way I could stay by your side. Not to mention find out how injured you were.”

“It was very presumptuous of you. Regina knows we’re not engaged. I told her.”

Kyle shrugged. “Presumptuous or not, I did what I had to do to keep you safe. And if Regina or the hospital have a problem with it, I’m sure I’ll be hearing from them about it.”

Everything he said made sense to her—even lying about their relationship. If a friend of hers had suffered the same injuries she had, she would do everything she could to stay with them—maybe not lie about being engaged.

Although she didn’t have that many friends now, so it wasn’t going to be an issue. The ones she did have were all married with kids, and their lives were super busy. Plus, they had their own husbands who could look after them if they were hurt.

“Thank you for being there for me. You went above and beyond what you needed to do. I’m feeling better now, so you can take me home.”

God, how polite did she sound?

It didn’t matter, all she wanted was to be alone so that she could somehow work through everything that was going on in her life right now.

“Do you want more to eat?” Kyle asked?

While she’d been interrogating him, Eveline had munched her way through the three slices of toast he’d made her and finished her coffee. Although the first thing she’d do when she got home was make another coffee and liberally pour copious amounts of creamer in it. “No, I’m good. I just want to get home.”

“Not so fast. We need to discuss what happened to you last night. We also need to go to the police and file a report. They came in while you were sleeping, and I told them you would be in later to do it.”

Eveline opened her mouth to protest, but Kyle held up his hand.

“I don’t care if you think you can’t describe the assailant, you need it on record,” he said, his voice a command.

In case something else happens.

The words weren’t said, but instinct told Eveline he was thinking them. He worked in security. Of course, he’d suspect that something else might happen to her.
