Page 71 of Keeping Eveline

Eveline crawled into his lap and clung to him.

He buried his face in her neck, needing this physical connection.

“I’m right here, babe. In your arms. In your bed. In your apartment,” Eveline whispered. “You’ve got me, and I’ve got you.”

Ox savored the moment and tried to push the remnants of the dream aside. He’d take the warning. He’d triple-check that he always had his weapon on him.

Chapter Twenty-Four

There was nothing unusual in the air. Or even the day, yet Ox’s skin prickled like thousands of tiny bugs were marching up and down.

There was no danger around him. He touched his side at the reassuring bulk of his holster.

He wasn’t about to bust into a building of a known terrorist when there was a chance he’d take a bullet to the head. No, he was safe in his office.

Eveline was in the conference room going over some of the information Cass had found. No one was going to raid the office and take the woman he loved.

Everything was fine.

He needed to stop focusing on his dream and concentrate on the here and now. On the task at hand. Try to uncover the mystery that was Gerald Morkham and his interest in Eveline.

More of Gerald’s interactions with the Desert Snakes Gang that Randall had been a member of were coming to light. Cass wanted Eveline to cross-reference the initial information she’d brought in, to validate what Gerald was doing to expand his business.

Ox fully expected that some of Triple Z’s new hires were connected to the gang as well.

There was no danger to Eveline at Alliez, not surrounded by four former military special forces men. Plus, the security of the building—one of the reasons he’d chosen this particular location to run the office.

A light tap sounded, and he glanced up.

Yolanda was in his doorway. “Julian’s here.”

Ox pushed away from his desk. “Great. I’ll get him and bring him back here.”

“I’ll bring Julian his coffee here. Do you want anything?”

“Nah, I’m good. Thanks”

Yolanda nodded and disappeared down to the kitchen, and Ox went to collect Julian.

“Hey, man.” He shook hands with the FBI agent.

“Ox, good to see you again.”

Ox noted the bag in the other man’s hand. Julian was there to discuss the job he wanted them to complete, one that they’d talked about a couple of times over the phone.

As there was still information Julian needed to collect, Ox hadn’t committed one way or the other about trip, until they had all the intel they could get. The last thing he wanted to do was put his men into a position where they were going in and putting their lives at risk without what they needed to know.

Ox wasn’t going to be joining his men on this mission. He didn’t want to leave Eveline, and now with this sense of unease walking right beside him, he was even more anxious and he couldn’t go.

He directed the FBI agent to the couch in the corner of his office. “Thanks for coming to me. I appreciate it.”

“Happy to get out of the office.” Julian opened his bag and laid some files on the table. “Here’s what we’ve got. Now that we’ve got more intel, it looks like a straightforward in-and-out job.”

Ox inwardly cringed. Nothing was ever straightforward, no matter how much it looked that way on paper. “Right. What do you need us for?”

Julian glanced up. “I thought you said you were unavailable?”

“I am, but I’ve still got three guys who can do what’s necessary. I’m close to putting together another team, so we’ll have more options.”
