Page 9 of Keeping Eveline

All ordinary everyday people who were too caught up in their own worlds to be worried about her. They probably hadn’t even really seen her, yet the feeling had seemed so real.

Had she imagined the feeling?

Was it paranoia causing to think she was being watched?

Determined not to let it bother her, Eveline headed for the checkout, the need to get home and in the relative safety of her apartment paramount urging her along.

As she walked to her car, her hair prickled again, and this time when she turned, she caught someone ducking behind a large SUV.

Fear thrummed through her—had Gerald found out she’d copied client files?

Chapter Four

The words blurred on the screen, and Ox sat back still not believing what he was reading. He’d spent the past two days going over the information on the thumb drive, and when it all made sense, he thought he was seeing things.

“Asshole,” he muttered.

“Who?”

Growler stood in the doorway.

Dammit, this was the second time in as many days that one of his staff members had stood in his office, and he hadn’t been aware that they were there.

“I’m assuming Angel told you about the visitor I had the other day?”

“Yeah, the chick from Triple Z. He mentioned that she’d dropped some information on you.”

Ox buried the shot of anger at hearing Growler refer to Eveline as the “chick.” “She’s not a chick,” he ground out.

Fuck!

Wasn’t he supposed to keep his reaction to Growler’s comments locked down? That was the plan, but he hadn’t executed it well at all.

His employee’s eyebrows rose in question, but whatever Growler was about to say he kept shut down. “Right, so you were about to explain who the asshole is.”

“Gerald Morkham. That’s who. Take a look at this.”

Ox swiveled his laptop, and Growler pulled it toward him.

It wasn’t hard to tell when it all fell into place for Growler.

The fact it’d taken Ox two days pissed him off.

“The guy is paying people to rough up his clients so they beef up their security needs, and he profits from it all. Is that what I’m seeing here or am I mistaken?”

“That’s what it looks like.”

Now that the initial burst of disgust had cleared, Ox fought the seed of doubt taking hold in his brain. Information could be manipulated to look like something was happening when it wasn’t.

“You doubting this?” Growler pointed to the screen. “It looks pretty obvious to me.”

Ox pushed away from his desk and wandered over to the window, gazing out but not seeing the view. “That’s the thing, it was obvious to you, but it took me two days to put it all together. Plus, how do we know this is what Triple Z want us to believe? That this is all a trap for us to fall into.”

Silence greeted him. When he turned back, Growler was studying the laptop screen, his brow furrowed.

When he looked up, his face was clear of any thoughts. Growler’s lack of expression wasn’t a surprise. Like himself, Growler was trained to bury his reactions and emotions so that the enemy couldn’t see any weakness. Not to mention by keeping his face neutral, no one knew what he was thinking.

“Are you saying you think Eveline’s visit wasn’t genuine, that she’s involved with this scheme?” Growler asked. “What does Triple Z achieve by giving us this information?”
