“Don’t worry, Kane.” I adjusted the drone to take a wide view and captured the battle as it rolled out. “Gareth didn’t see this coming.” The guy truly thought his niece was visiting to grovel. “I tapped into his phone. Gareth is so old school that he has a landline.” I shook my head and chuckled. “Caught a conversation with his head of security. Downplayed the danger of Charlie coming.” Not to mention completely misreading Johnny as the playboy sidekick to Kane and dismissed me outright as a non-issue. “His ego is so huge, he actually planned to humiliate her without repercussions.”

Kane snorted, but his eyes were steady on the chaos as it unfolded. I knew he’d rather be there, in the heat of things with Charlie, but she needed to test her boundaries without us looming. Johnny was the best choice to escort her to this fight because he hadn’t been working as closely with her to retrain her mind. He wasn’t tangled up in her inner conflict as much as Kane and I were.

I typed a few commands, intercepting a call for backup from Gareth’s security on site. There wouldn’t be anyone coming to the rescue. Gareth was going to have to face his demons today.

Charlie was imposing in full beast mode, but she was also smooth and skilled as she took on the wolves who had come to protect her uncle. She swiped and kicked, using claws and the threat of fangs to take them out, one by one, knocking them down, over and over until they didn’t get up again.

“She’s not killing them.” Kane sounded in awe, and I didn’t blame him. This was the first time Charlie had been in her beast form and hadn’t completely succumb to bloodlust. “She’s taking them down, but she’s not delivering a killing blow.”

“She has more control than she thinks she does,” I said, equally as in awe but also near giddy with the proof that I’d been right all along. She was the alpha queen. She was keeping them alive because she knew they’d bow to her in time.

The fight continued with Johnny and his team setting Gareth’s wolves up, putting them in Charlie’s path so she could knock them down. Blood was flying. Fur floated in the air. Gareth had run toward the cottage as if that would save him.

Charlie’s head came up, swiveled in her uncle’s direction, then she leapt and, in a beautiful takedown, she landed on his back and forced him to the ground.

She heaved him over so her snout was in his face. “You will submit,” she growled.

“Did you hear that?” Even I was surprised. She’d never been able to speak coherently while in beast form. I looked at Kane, whose eyes were wide, shock plain on his face.

Charlie wrapped her clawed hands around Gareth’s throat, blood spurted from flesh wounds, not enough to suggest she was puncturing veins or arteries but enough to show her intent. “Where is Andrew?”

Gareth may have been full of ego, but he wasn’t stupid. He knew what Charlie was capable of.

“H-h-he f-failed his m-mission,” Gareth sputtered.

“What mission?”

“To capture you.”

Charlie settled back, crushing Gareth’s legs with her weight. He screamed. She sneered.

“You sent him.” It wasn’t a question.

Gareth murmured something unintelligible.

“Why?”

“To put you in your place.” He gasped as Charlie tightened her grip. “To put a leash on you, like your father should have when you were born.”

“My place,” she roared as she leaned in again, her fangs gleaming.

Gareth shuddered, a look of pure revulsion on his face. Charlie lifted her head and roared into the sky, spit flying, fangs gleaming.

Kane leaned closer to the screen. Every muscle in my body was tense.

Charlie lowered her head slowly.

“My place, Uncle, is right here.”

She lunged quickly then bit, sinking her fangs deep into the dip between Gareth’s shoulder and throat.

Ohhhhh fuck.

Kane pushed himself away from the desk like he was ready to bolt out of here.

“Wait…Kane…”

Gareth’s scream died as Charlie ripped her mouth away, blood flying.
