She sputtered on a laugh. “No! Fuck no. I didn’t get that close.”

The spike of fear staking me slid out slowly. My heart eased its heavy thundering. “Thank fuck.”

“He bit Jared.” She laughed again. “But he deserved it, the ass.”

My world tilted, knees wobbled, hands slicked with sweat immediately. Just as suddenly, my werebeast senses kicked into play, firming up my weakness so quickly that my rising panic flashed out and alpha mode took over.

“Tell me what happened,” I ordered, my tone too rough, but Ruby didn’t seem to notice.

“Jared was over picking up some of his stuff. The coyote was outside as usual. Jared tried to be all big tough guy, which we both know he isn’t.” She snorted. “The coyote dove for him. I screamed. Jared couldn’t run fast enough back to the apartment. The coyote got him in the butt.” She was laughing for real now, like this was some great comedy show. I knew she was expecting me to laugh with her, to take joy in Jared’s mistake. In all other circumstances, the man would deserve a bite in the ass, but not this time.

“Where is he now?” My voice shook but I passed it off as a stunted laugh.

“Jared, oh he’s—"

“The coyote. Where’s the animal?” Ruby was in danger. I headed toward Kane’s den.

I’d be flying back to Toronto immediately.

“Taken care of.” She pulled the plug on the sink, and I heard water rushing down the pipes. “I called a wildlife officer. Coyote has been tranquilized, trapped and taken in for testing or something.”

Oh fuck. Andrew was in human custody

“And Jared?” If he’d been bitten by a werewolf, his change would start immediately. He’d have until the full moon to adjust to the transformation before it completely took over, and given that it was only three days away, that meant that his shift was coming quickly—so quickly that it would most likely make him insane before it killed him.

Ruby started to answer when her doorbell rang. “Oh hey, speak of the devil.”

It was late, close to midnight Toronto time.

My heart dropped to my toes.

“Ruby, don’t answer the door.”

But she wasn’t listening.

“Charlie, hang on a sec.” Her door squeaked open. “If you think a little ass injury is going to make me forgive you—”

Ruby screamed, and it was cut off in a gurgled way that made me nauseated.

“Ruby! Hang on. I’m coming.”

I heard her phone hit the ground then the line went dead.

Chapter Sixteen

Kane

“I know where Andrew is,” Charlie blurted, her face pale, eyes wide. “I have to get to Toronto.”

She was talking so fast it was almost hard to follow her. “Toronto isn’t safe, not with Andrew unaccounted for. You’re an alpha now. You don’t run into the danger.”

“Don’t even go there.” She bypassed me on the way to the front door. “Ruby’s in trouble.”

I grabbed her arm, and she spun around, her teeth bared, werebeast right there, ready to rip my throat out. Somehow Charlie kept herself in check, and it was amazing to see…finally.

“Slow down. My men are there. I’ll send them to Ruby. Just tell me what’s going on.”

She sucked in a deep breath, her eyes wild. “Her ex was bitten by Andy.”
