Kane narrowed his eyes as he shifted his gaze past me and back to his brother. “You’re a beast.”

“We completed the loop. He has my bite, and I have his.” I flexed my arms, the muscles tight like coils.

“Which means you’re one-third of the way to Sal’s ultimate plan.” Andrew’s voice still held a quiver, and he was on his knees, but he no longer looked quite as pathetic as he had moments before.

“Three bites?” I moved closer to him, towering, my fangs aching to take a bite. “What will three bites do for Sal? Other than bring him one step closer to his own destruction.”

“Are you kidding?” Andrew balked. “Have you ever known Sal’s ego to allow him a moment of thought when it comes to common sense?” He sat back on his heels. “He wants you to get all three bites so he can hunt and kill you. He says you’ll be the ultimate prize.”

I scoffed. Kane grumbled. Levi stepped closer to me, pulsing me with a surge of protective anger.

I reached behind me to touch his furry arm. Squeezing enough to tell him to stand down.

“He thinks he has it all figured out, and he has a bunch of messed up witches backing him.” Andrew shook his head. “You’ll be powerful, sure, but he’ll have magic on his side and all the dirty tricks you won’t see coming.”

“Oh really?” I bulked up, taking up more space and sucking the air out of the room. “I don’t think he really knows what I’m capable of.”

Andrew gave me a once-over that made me want to kick him.

“Charlie, you’re magnificent.” Andrew cleared his throat. “Dad always said…” He waved his hand up and down. “But I didn’t know until now what he meant. You’re truly a queen.”

“Shut up, Andy,” I barked, ignoring his warning about Sal. I needed time to process the information. “You’ve fucked things up. You know your actions led to my best friend taking a feral’s bite? Why’d you go after her boyfriend like that?”

Andrew’s smile slid off his face. “He came at me with a pipe. I reacted. I wasn’t trying to hurt your friend or her boyfriend. I was keeping watch.”

I snorted, my arms crossed, knowing it must look comical for me to stand this way, but it wasn’t like my human mannerisms disappeared when I was in beast mode.

“I’m telling you the truth. Here—” He rolled his head to the side. “If you don’t trust my words, then mark me. I’m ready to bow a knee to your leadership.”

I shook my head, gagging at the idea of taking on another werewolf who was a relative. Blood relation or not, having my uncle tied to me was already gross enough.

“Stand up and act like you have some respect for yourself,” I growled.

Andy jumped to his feet, so eager to obey. It was suspicious, and I didn’t trust him, but his offer to take my bite did give me an idea.

“You say that Sal wants me to get three bites? That’s why he sold me to Kane?”

“He would have put something in the contract for purchase, too.” Andy nodded, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed. “Now that you have one, the other two will follow quickly. According to the scrolls, each bite brings a physiological change that calls to the others.”

Kane took a step back from me like I was suddenly contagious.

I rolled my eyes.

Levi grunted.

“What scrolls?” I filled in for Levi.

“The ancient texts. We don’t have the complete story, but we believe that you’re the one—the beast destined to become the top wolf. When you get the three bites, you become the queen of the wolves. That’s when Sal will put his plan into action.”

“His plan to hunt me?” Things were starting to make sense to me. Sal’s grand scheme to murder me would, of course, be attached to his ego.

“Charlie, I know you think he has no chance at killing you, but the scrolls say differently and so do the scholars. They’ve told Sal that he can beat you, and once he does, he’ll bite you and absorb all your pack connections, all of your wolves’ allegiance and loyalty, before he kills you. They’ll all belong to him, and he’ll be the most powerful alpha in Vancouver.”

“That son of a bitch,” Kane growled. “Why are the scholars pandering to him?”

I ignored Kane’s venting, not because I wasn’t equally as baffled by the scholars’ actions but because I just couldn’t handle one more thing. Not right now. “And Sal thinks he’ll be able to kill me with his bite?” It was hard to believe that one simple bite could do so much damage, and yet, one bite had already changed my world drastically.

“He’ll kill you however he can. He’s got witches on his side, and he’ll do you dirty. Let me join you. I’ll be your right hand.” Andrew was groveling again, his eyes pleading.
