But they didn’t. Their haunted eyes locked onto mine as they came closer, the fire spreading up their garments.

“Now, Elowyn!” the voice boomed again.

They kept approaching.

Fear locked in place, forcing me to watch in horror.

I needed to do something. Anything.

Shaking my head of the destructive thoughts, I closed my eyes and did as he instructed, channeling every bit of strength and emotion until it welled to the surface.

I grasped the raw energy in my palms, its frigid intensity numbing my fingers.

Then I opened my eyes—black shadows unleashing from my hands—evaporating the flames and everything in my sight.

“Elowyn!” a voice roared from somewhere beside me.

My eyes ripped open, and I sat up, inhaling a deep, full breath. The smell of smoke still lingered in my nostrils. On my hair.

Talon sat at the foot of my bed. His hair appeared disheveled as he ran a hand through his onyx strands.

“Fucking stars.” He huffed, resting his forearms on his knees. “It sounded like you were being murdered.”

I rubbed the back of my neck, soothing the ache that throbbed deep in my muscles. He remained quiet, allowing me the space as I woke up, blinking my eyes into focus as I got my bearings.

Golden sunlight cascaded through my window, reflecting off the mirror, blinding me.

“How long have I been asleep?” I pulled my legs to my chest.

“Maybe an hour—or two? I was finishing up my shift and heading back to check on you when I heard your screams at the end of the corridor.”

My face warmed. “Did anyone else hear me?”

“Aeron’s still in the mess hall, if that’s what you’re wondering.” He stood from the bed, concern furrowing his beautiful features. “I know you don’t want to, but you need to talk about Kelvin’s death.”

“This has nothing to do with Kelvin.”

“So, what’s it about out then?”

I didn’t know what to say. How could I explain the reasoning behind these nightmares when I didn’t know myself? They were because of Lilian. My mother. My fears. All my insecurities and feelings I try to ignore.

I twisted the ring around my finger, ashamed to look at Talon. I didn’t want his pity.

Talon paced the room for a moment before he sat in the chair beside me, resting his forearms on his knees. “How long have you been having these nightmares?”

“It’s really not that serious?—”

“How long, Elowyn?” He pinched the bridge of his nose.

“A month, maybe. Please don’t make it a big deal, it’s fine. They don’t happen all the time.”

“You should’ve told me instead of suffering through it alone. I could’ve helped.” He furrowed his brows as if he were trying to make sense of it. “Some of the things you said…”

My pulse quickened. “Like what?”

“Ah, you know. Like how sexy and charming you think I am?—”

An incredulous laugh escaped me as I relaxed back into my own skin, and I tossed a small pillow at him. “You’re such an ass. I’m being serious.”
