“I’m kidding, I’m kidding.” He laughed and brought my hand to his mouth, lightly kissing each of my knuckles.

The delicate touch of his lips on my skin turned me to liquid, and I had to make an effort not to squirm closer to him. “Mhm, you better be.”

“Or what?” Talon pushed, his eyes growing dark. He ran his knuckles along my rib cage before his hand settled on my waist.

I sucked in a breath. That familiar, relentless pull between us sparked to life as we watched each other, my pulse raging in my veins. “Or I’d challenge you to a duel.”

His head tipped back with laughter. “Okay, settle down, firefly. I wouldn’t want you to hurt yourself.”

Forever insufferable.

“One of these days, I’m going to put you in your place.” I playfully shoved Talon in the shoulder, and he tickled my ribcage, pulling me with him as he rolled onto his back.

“Give me your worst,” he challenged.

Through my fit of giggles and several minutes of attempting to find his vulnerable, sensitive spots, I found myself on top of him, straddling his waist. My thighs ached to clamp around him tighter.

His smile was feral. He adjusted himself underneath me.

Our faces inches apart.

I took in his sharp features, remembering to breathe as my laughter subsided—wondering if Talon could feel my erratic heartbeat. Stars, what I’d give to look at him forever. No painting or illustration could ever truly capture his otherworldly essence. My chest ached as I traced his jawline with the pad of my fingertips, our noses brushing as he leaned up to kiss me. The memories of him wouldn’t be enough.

I pulled away at the last second, biting back a smile. “You don’t think I was going to let you kiss me that easily, do you?”

Talon shrugged. “I was hopeful.”

The night of the faerie ball replayed in my head. How passionately he’d claimed my mouth in that dark, secluded hallway. How every nerve ending had caught fire and turned my insides into molten lava. The way my body reacted to his touch was unnervingly hypnotizing, yet the thing that stood out the most was how badly I craved more—and how often I fantasized about it. About Talon.

Maybe it was the fact my mortality was inching closer by the day, or maybe I yearned for physical connection, whatever the reason, I couldn’t stop myself from trailing kisses down his neck, relishing in the way his chest rose and fell with deep breaths.

Stars, how badly I wanted him. To feel him.

Talon flipped me onto my back, taking advantage of my momentary distraction, and ran his fingers along the underside of my breast.

I arched into his touch, my skin purring with bliss. I needed more. So much more.

His lips grazed my jaw, tracing the curvature of my ear with his tongue. “You should know I always get what I want, firefly.”

His rough timbre sent shivers up my spine, and my legs tightened around him involuntarily.

“And what is that, exactly?” I breathed, gripping the hair at the nape of his neck.

Talon’s lips tickled my skin as his tongue licked the tip of my nose. “You. Always you.”

His hands found their way to the hem of my blouse, his calloused fingers grazing my stomach, and I arched into his touch again.

My fingernails sank into the tension of his shoulders while his hands firmly gripped my thighs, drawing me nearer. A low hum reverberated through my body, and I concealed a satisfied smile, tracing my hands down the length of his arms. I was growing more and more impatient with each touch. Each kiss.

I clung to him, holding him to me. Feeling the sharp nips and fervent suction on my throat, I stifled my moans with limited success.

His lips crashed onto mine, devouring any escaping sounds in a passionate collision, swallowing them.

I opened for him. Welcomed his tongue with my own as it dipped into my mouth. Drunk off cinnamon and magic. He teased me in return, rolling and sliding it in and out, taunting me with his slow and diligent strokes while his fingers roamed the back of my thigh.

My body ached for him—it needed more.

More.
