I arched into him and pulled him closer, meeting his tongue stroke for stroke to silence him. “You have nothing to apologize for,” I said between breaths. “I should be the one asking for forgiveness. I didn’t mean any of the cruel things I said. I was just angry. Confused.”

He sunk his teeth into my neck, and I moaned, biting my lip.

A wicked smile curled up the side of Talon’s lips as his mouth found mine and his hips rocked against me, wanting and ready. His kisses soft and diligent—nothing like the rushed, desperate frenzy of stolen touches back at the castle. No, Talon was taking his time, savoring me as if he had all the time in the world. His hand slid down my body, appreciating every curve along the way until he reached my waist. Deft fingers caressing my skin.

Talon leaned down, brushed his nose along mine, and kissed me.

I reached for his waistband, feeling for the clasp, but he pulled my hand away and pinned it above my head. “No, firefly. No. Tonight, you’re mine. I’m going to show you exactly what you do to me.”

The weight of his body on top of mine drove me wild, and my hips bucked, desperate to meet his. Desperate for more. His firm grip had me crying out, and I hooked my legs around his waist, guiding him to me, but he resisted. Teasing me.

More. I needed more.

Insufferable prick.

“Every fucking dream I have revolves around you, every thought,” he said against my lips, and I drank in every syllable, writhing with pleasure as his tongue trailed down my neck. “Let me show you what you do to me, Elowyn.” My name never sounded so beautiful. Like a sacred oath, as it rolled off his tongue—with such tenderness and promise, my chest threatened to rip open. “Let me show you how consumed I am by you.” Talon scooped me into his arms then and unclasped my vest, pushing it off my shoulders as he removed my blouse.

My fingers trailed down his stomach until they reached the hem of his shirt, and I tugged it over his head, pulling him back to me, unable to stand the separation.

Talon smiled against my mouth and grabbed a handful of my breast, working the button on my pants with the other. He helped me pull them past my hips, cradling my head in a kiss while I shimmied them off, and tossed them to the side.

My bare legs chilled as the crisp air brushed my skin, and Talon’s eyes darkened. His gaze swept over me as I lay before him in only my undergarments. Slowly and deliberately.

Talon removed his pants and let them fall to the ground, appreciating my body a little while longer before he removed the thin gossamer barriers, leaving me completely exposed.

A hum of his appreciation settled over me. “Stars, firefly, you’re so fucking perfect,” he said, kissing my forehead while he buried himself inside me.

His eyes fluttered closed as he savored the feeling. Talon’s mouth fell open with a breathless sigh, and I gasped.

He brushed his thumb along my lower lip as he pulled out, lightly moving in and out until I adjusted to his size. He covered my mouth with his, swallowing my moans as he continued to rock against me with diligent, easy strokes. His hand never left my breast, his other tangled in my hair as he entered me, worshiping every inch of my body, slowly picking up speed.

Demanding.

Unadulterated moans fell from my lips.

He filled me, my hips meeting his stroke for stroke.

Talon’s low, deep groans sent me over the edge as I came undone around him, his rhythm never slowing as I grew wings and flew, pleasure rippling through me so intense stars exploded in my vision. The corner of his mouth lifted into a grin at my completion, and I fell limp. His eyes rolled into the back of his head as he came with me, the growl that escaped him splitting me in half.

Talon pulled me to his chest as if I’d actually fly away and kissed my shoulder, gathering my hair to the side, licking the salt-slicked skin at the nape of my neck.

I shuddered in his arms, interlocking our fingers, and my breaths labored, exhaustion pulling me into its grips.

I turned around and nuzzled my head into the crook of his arm. “Please, never leave me again.”

“Not even in my dreams.” He kissed the tip of my nose, tucking a stray piece of hair behind my ear—his gaze serious. In his arms, I was safe.

And in that moment, I knew that no matter what happened, as long as I had him, everything would be okay.

Thirty-Seven

We made it to the Dolorem River the next morning before the sun rose in the sky, neither of us knowing how long we had until the king’s guard caught up to us. All we knew was, that despite how perfectly our bodies molded together to shield each other from the brisk morning air, there was no time to waste if we wanted to keep whatever advantage we might’ve had. If any.

I could’ve stayed tucked away in his treehouse, curled up with Talon, for eternity. Or at least held onto that moment a little longer before reality came crashing down like an unforgiving wave—relentless and unabated. Before everything changed forever.

My heart leaped into my throat as we approached the shore, an odd stillness settling over the forest with each step Zephyr took as if it held its breath, waiting to see what’d happen next. That made two of us. A few short weeks ago, I’d looked across this same river with hope and eagerness.

Today, I returned to where my nightmare began.
