“Jesus, Lore. I’m so sorry.”

“Can you feed Cosmo too?”

“Yeah, but you know the fucking cat hates me.” He rests his hands on my shoulders. “Take all the time you need. Where are you going?”

Looking into his pretty green eyes, I frown. “The last fucking place I want to go. The one place on this planet I swore I’d never return to.”

“Jesus, Lore. Where?”

“Tourmaline, home to the fucking Savage Angels.”

Chapter One

LORE

The sun’s rays warm me as I sit in my rental car and stare at the Baptist Hospital. It took me a flight and a day’s drive to get here. Reporters are everywhere at the front of the entrance, and Savage Angels’ members are keeping them all out.

A familiar face walks out of the hospital. He scowls at the mass of people before him, then wanders down the sidewalk, pulling a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket.

Dirt hasn’t changed much over the past ten years. He’s more weathered, probably from too many biker rallies. His dirty blond hair is touching his shoulders—I guess he’s wearing it a little longer. Even from this distance, I can see the scar that goes from his temple into his hair. I always thought it gave him character and, as he’s only five foot nine, gave him some street cred. If you’re smart, you don’t tangle with Dirt. He can more than handle himself in a fight, not with knives or guns, although he’s more than capable with these as well. It’s his fists you need to watch out for. One punch is normally all it takes for him to have you lying in the dirt with your teeth all over the ground. We have a history, one I walked away from and never wanted to revisit.

With a groan, I open the door to my rental car. Dirt’s head swivels in my direction, but I’m sure he knew I was here long before he looked at me. My lips turn down as I stare at him and climb out of the car. He has the hide to give me a chin lift as he takes a drag on his cigarette. Slamming my door, I put my handbag on my shoulder and stalk toward him.

His eyes widen when I pull the cancer-causing stick from his mouth, drop it on the ground, and grind my boot into it.

“Jesus, lady, take a pill.”

Removing my shades, I put them on my head. “Those things will kill you, Dirt.”

“Lore?” His posture stiffens, and his eyebrows shoot up to his hairline.

“And what the fuck did you and your MC do to my son?”

Dirt stumbles back. “What?”

“Tobias. What the fuck happened to him?”

His mouth drops open. “You’re Tobias’ mother?”

Turning, I give him my back and shout as I walk away, “You always were quick on the uptake.”

His boots pound heavily on the pavement as he jogs after me. Dirt’s hand wraps around my upper arm, and he spins me around.

“You haven’t changed at all, have you? Still spitting venom and unkind words at anyone who is in your way.” Pointedly, I stare at his hand on my arm, and he lets go. Dirt takes a step back, shaking his head. He sucks in a breath and, in a softer tone, says, “I’m sorry about Tobias. He’s a good man.”

Never in all the years when we were together did he ever apologize or offer words of comfort. Together, we were toxic, feeding off each other, and eventually, whatever it was I thought we had evaporated. I remember a feeling of relief when it was finally over.

“Can you take me to him?”

Dirt nods, walks ahead of me through the crowd, and straight to the hospital elevators. Once inside, he clears his throat and casts a sideways glance in my direction.

“What?” I ask with a sigh.

“Have you been sacrificing small children?”

Blowing out my cheeks, I reply, “What?”

“It’s just you look good, Lore. You haven’t aged a day.”
