Running would make me look like prey, and I wasn’t even sure who this person behind me was, so I turned. A gleeful feeling wiped away the previous adrenaline as my gaze fell on Oliver-fucking-Mason, my first love—who wasn’t exactly a first love—but my high school crush. Ugh.

“Oliver!” God, he’d always been hot, but right now, he looked like a ball of fire itself. “Jesus Christ.” Excitement seeped through me.

“Yeah, Jesus Christ, Adrienne.” His black eyes sparkled, just like his wide grin. “You look so hot.”

“Do I?” His compliment made my cheeks flush. “It’s been like what? Forever?”

“Forever is an understatement, truthfully.” He rounded the area what his gaze. “What are you doing here? And what is that you’ve got there?” He squinted at the diamond cufflink in my hand. “Let me guess, your dad? Your lover?”

“Neither.” Andrei was not my lover, yet a slight amount of guilt tugged on my heart. “It’s for someone who isn’t even a friend.”

“I see.” Oliver nodded. He brushed his brown hair with his hands. “Do you mind joining me for coffee at the café downstairs?”

Mikhail was waiting outside, and I didn’t think Andrei would take the matter lightly if he knew I was chatting away with an old friend while keeping his brother waiting. “No, maybe some other time.”

My stomach chose to be the villain in my life’s story; it rumbled, calling Oliver’s attention and mine to it.

“You sure?” Oliver asked, giving me a defeated look. “I think you may need some snacks too.”

I heaved a sigh. “Fifteen minutes, that’s all I have to spare.”

“Works fine for me.”

He helped me carry half the bags and we strolled to the café downstairs. Three minutes later we’d gotten our coffee and I had a hamburger to quench my hunger. We chatted about meaningless things; he told me how he’d become CEO of his dad’s company and all the other information I could’ve spent the rest of my life without knowing.

“Tell me, Adrienne.” He leaned back on his French bistro chair. “Are you seeing anyone?”

I bit down on a mouthful of burger. “No. I don’t think I’m in the situation to date just yet.” It was the truth, dating was a sin that came with a lifelong tainting of one’s name in our underworld, especially for women.

“Too bad.” His countenance changed into a sad one. “I wanted to ask you on a date next time we meet.”

Another bite of my burger. “Unfortunately, you can’t.”

“I think I still have a chance, you can make exceptions,” he said confidently.

“Well, I can’t.” I had a feeling our catching up would turn sour soon. “I think I should go now.”

“Come on, Adrienne. Don’t try to play hard to get.” He leaned forward, sending the urge to stay alert to my brain. “I know you liked me in high school, you’d have done anything to have me as your boyfriend.”

This would end badly. “It’s a good thing we’re no longer in high school then, don’t you think so?”

He laughed, a low, insulting kind of laugh that you’d often hear from the bad guys in movies. “I wasn’t gonna date you then ‘cause you weren’t one of the modelish kind of girls. I mean, your breasts and ass were bigger than the other girls. You know, not so hot back then.”

Was this motherfucker body shaming me?

“But now, I kinda want to know what it’ll feel like to spank that ass and fuck you from behind.”

“You’ll only get to do that in your imagination. Spanking my ass and fucking me from behind, I mean.” My patience was running out. “Thanks for the coffee and burger but I think it’s best I leave now.”

I picked up my shopping bags and turned to the exit when he grabbed my hands. Disgust grew in my stomach.

“I want to fuck you, Adrienne, just once. Huh?”

Okay, that was it. My patience was exhausted. I turned to him, narrowing my gaze at his balls, before I could raise my legs to kick them, someone flew past me at the speed of light. Before I could register who it was, Oliver was writhing in pain on the floor.

A familiar rosewood perfume filled the air, and a dark aura possessed the environment.
