“Place the call now.” A deal wasn’t a deal until it was sealed and done. I’d learned that from my father.

Men who did the dirty sort of work we did weren’t very honest people, and I was one of those men. I even liked to believe I was way worse than they were.

My eyes trailed him as he took his phone out and made a call to one of his underlings, asking for a shipment to be sent to my warehouse.

He peered at me through almost gray lashes when he ended the call. “I’ve kept my part of the deal. It’s your turn now.” He propelled his wrinkled hands. “Bring the girl.”

Adrienne’s eyes were piercing into my soul. Her fear was loud and clear. I raised her hand, the one with our wedding ring on it, and kissed it.

I pulled her close enough to whisper into her ear. “Stay behind me.”

She probably hadn’t even registered a word I said when I flipped her behind me and flew to my feet, using myself as I human shield to protect her while I slid out a gun from my jacket and started shooting.

The men tried to bring out their own guns, but they weren’t fast. I guessed that was one of the curses of getting old. The ones who’d survived my flying bullets laid low on the ground.

I led Adrienne to the table, seeking one of the old farts, the one who’d dared to call my wife a whore and even raised his hand to hit her.

The fucker was trembling when I corked my gun to his head. “Sit up,” I commanded.

He did, all while still quivering like the weakling he was. Men like him were nothing before men like me. Men like him lived for intimidating and abusing women and children because they couldn’t go one-on-one with other men.

I hated bastards like that.

He sat up, and he’d pissed himself. Disgusting.

I kept my gun on the asshole’s head and turned to Adrienne. “What do you think I should do with him?” I asked. “Put a bullet through his tongue or chop off his hands?”

Adrienne didn’t reply. She huffed, spun around, and walked out of the room.

“Adrienne.” Shit.

I knocked the man out with my gun’s magazine and ran after Adrienne. She was mad at me, rightfully so. I would be too if I were her.

Dead men lined the hallway. My men had come prepared for this occasion and it didn’t seem any of them had been hurt. Mikhail nodded at me, asking if they could proceed with disposing of the dead men’s bodies and I nodded back.

I couldn’t catch a glimpse of Adrienne when I reached downstairs. She wasn’t in the car or anywhere around it. I narrowed my eyes at the road, and that was when I saw her.

She was skedaddling down the road as fast as her legs could carry, the diamonds on her dress sparking as the headlights from the cars poured on them.

I opened my car door and slid inside, ignited the engine, and drove after her.

I crossed my car in front of her so that she’d have no place to pass through. “Adrienne,” I called out to her as I came down from the car. “Get in the car.” I wasn’t certain if it was a command or if I was pleading with her. I just needed her in the damn car.

“Go screw yourself, Andrei,” she barked. “You must think so little of me. I hate you.”

She tried to walk past me, but I grabbed her arm and pulled her back. “It’s not what you think, okay?”

Her eyes were crimson with rage. “What was it? You used me as a bargaining chip you cheap asshole.”

Most of the passersby had their eyes in our direction. The last thing I needed was for one of them to make a video and bring unnecessary trouble to me right now. I wasn’t prepared to take care of Dante Paolo at the moment but if anyone captured Adrienne and me in this moment and uploaded it on the internet, Dante would seek me out.

That was the reason why I had to end those old farts.

“Come with me.” I held her wrist. “Let’s find somewhere quiet to talk.”

She slapped my hand on her wrist, trying to hit it down, but I fastened it even tighter. “What’s there to talk about?” she panted. “Are you trying to negotiate me off to the highest bidder again?”

I bit my lips. I wasn’t as smart-mouthed as Adrienne and it would be a waste of time trying to argue with her. “No questions. Just come.” I managed to drag her to the car after much trouble and drove off.
