Even now, my heart was breaking and my peace was replaced with sadness.

I liked Andrei, perhaps too much to ever let him get hurt or even hurt him myself.

Chapter 20 - Andrei

Adrienne did not belong in this darkness with me. I could see it no matter how well she hid it. She wasn’t like Dante or me.

She was like Isabella.

She loved the sunshine and the view of the water. Her eyes squinted when she smiled, and she longed for an escape from this world even more than she thought.

And I was going to give her that. I wanted her to be happy and it didn’t matter if it meant I needed to give her up.

We’d left the beach house an hour after I received Mikhail’s call. Apparently, Carlos Amigo, the son of one of the old farts I’d killed, trailed his way to my warehouse this morning and he’d demanded answers on his father’s disappearance.

Carlos Amigo was the head of the Mexican drug lords. Fucker had overthrown his father because he’d thought he was too old for the business, and he wasn’t entirely wrong.

I wasn’t sure what Carlos’s relationship with his father was, but I hoped we could negotiate sweetly and easily. If that wasn’t an option, I’d regret how much I had to use my gun. I never got involved in a war unless it was necessary.

Some of my men had families and as much as they’d sworn their lives to me, I tried not to waste those lives when there were other ways I could go about it.

“What if they come for you?” Adrienne asked from the passenger seat. She looked anxious. “What if they come for us, Andrei?”

I put my upper lips in between my teeth. “No one will harm you, malysh. For all anyone knows, you’re my prisoner.”

“We’re married.”

“I forced you into marrying me, remember?”

“You’re not allowed to ever die, Andrei. I’m the only one who can kill you and I mean it,” she said. “I’ll kill you if you ever die.”

Her threat pulled a small smile to my lips. Adrienne worrying about me was the cutest thing ever. I barely thought any woman was cute, but Adrienne was to me.

“Don’t worry, I won’t die easily,” I assured her. “You’ll have your chance to slice my neck open.”

She rolled her eyes. “Good.”

I couldn’t remember much of what happened next, but I’d been distracted watching Adrienne’s face when a car collided with ours, hitting Adrienne’s side of the door with so much force that our car tumbled over. The tires screeched in the air and the windows shattered, sending sharp glasses in the air.

The last thing I remembered was Adrienne’s bloody face.

Chapter 21 - Adrienne

I could hear whistles, distant hums, and muffled voices. The smell of cigarettes and diesel filled the air and there was soreness all over my body that made it hard for me to move.

The last memory I had was sitting in the car with Andrei and I didn’t recall anything else happening after that. What happened and where was I now?

My hands were tied and I felt warm liquid drip down my face. I opened my eyes slowly. There was darkness all around me, but it was bright enough for me to make out the feet walking toward me.

Two large feet in what looked like a pair of black cowboy boots edged toward me slowly and calculatedly. I managed to raise my head, blinking up at his silhouette in front of me. He was wearing a cowboy hat and I quickly thought of the Mexican Andrei had told me about.

I couldn’t recall his name; I guess I was in really bad shape.

“Look who’s awake,” he said as he grabbed a chair from the side, moved it in front of me, and sat on it. “Hola, muchacha!” He gave me an awkward smile that made me shudder and I saw the gold tooth in his front teeth.

“Who the hell are you?” I mumbled weakly.

“Oh, muchaha. Forgive my bad manners,” he apologized putting his hand on his chest. “I am Carlos Amigo. I believe you met my father a night ago.”
