“I don’t think Dante would do something as stupid as that.”

Knowing my papa, I was certain his doing something stupid out of anger was something to be considered, I’d lived with him long enough to know how much of a beast he became when things didn’t go his way. I shook my head. “No, you can’t trust him not to hurt her. You said he’d been your rival since forever, what if he was jealous or something?”

My breaths were shallow and irregular as anger and sadness collided with each other, raising a storm inside me. “Why would he lie about her death and my existence if he didn’t do something foolish?” I grabbed Andrei’s hand with a desperate plea. “You must help me bring my papa down, please.”

Andrei nodded.

“One more thing,” I breathed. “You said you’d burn the world to the ground for me.”

I waited for him to respond. He nodded again.

“You don’t have to do that.” Because there was something more that I wanted him to do, something harder than simply burning the world to the ground. “Save the world with me instead.”

He narrowed his eyes to hint he had no idea what I meant. I tried to calm myself because I knew my request could be met with utter rejection.

“What would you do if we had a daughter?”

A glee reflected on Andrei’s countenance. “Are you asking, malysh?” He ran a finger on my lips. “I’d protect her with my own life.”

I gave him an inclining nod. “Of course you will.” Help me God. “Have you ever thought of those women you have trafficked? The women who are kidnapped, drugged, and raped under your watch?”

Andrei’s eyes upturned. It was possible my words were getting through to him, but I had to keep my expectations low.

“They’re daughters, loved by other people the same way you’ll love ours.” I collected his hand from my face and placed kisses there. “Don’t you think it’s time to put an end to it?”

He clenched his jaw, and his eyes darkened. He was every bit the bloody mafia boss I heard him to be, not my Andrei or the father of my child, just Andrei the bloodsucker.

I expected him to push me away from his body, curse at me or even punish me the way my papa used to, but his gaze brightened, and his throat moved as he swallowed. “I will, malysh,” he said to my surprise. “No more using women.”

Relief overtook the nerves that had worked up in my anticipation of what Andrei’s response would be. I smiled because it was clearer than day, that this man here, this man whom I hated with my being, would do anything for me.

Because he was my person.

Chapter 28 - Adrienne

I sniffled the smell of omelets and fried beef. I hadn’t eaten those in so long and I don’t know if it was because of the baby, but now that I perceived them, I had a feeling I’d crave them all day.

I’d fallen asleep on Andrei’s chest while discussing possible unisex baby names for the little Levov growing inside of me. Andrei had chosen Liliya because he was positive it would be a little girl that we’d cherish like the lily flower. I’d had a different opinion though; I’d chosen Aleksis because I had a strong feeling it would be a boy.

We’d gone ahead and made a bet on one of us granting the winner a wish. I giggled because I knew I’d be right. I had to start thinking of what wish I’d ask Andrei to fulfill. I moved my hands behind me in search of Andrei. I supposed he’d rolled away from me in his sleep but quickly opened my eyes when I realized the bed was empty.

Sunlight poured into the room, lighting dust particles in the air. I glanced around, noticing the portrait of my mother on the wall had disappeared, I figured I could find where it went later, for now, I had to find a way to satisfy my omelet cravings, but not before finding out who dared to soil the air with such a sweet aroma.

We haven’t had a cook since Maria left two days ago, so it made me wonder if Andrei had gotten a new cook already. I ambled to the bathroom to use the toilet and take a quick shower before going down to the kitchen.

“Good morning, malysh,” met me as soon as I walked inside the kitchen. We didn’t have a new cook, but I’d genuinely take the sight in front of me over a new cook, truly. Andrei was standing in front of the counter, stirring something with one hand while giving me a smile that caused my breath to cease for a good minute.

He was wearing a pair of baggy shorts with nothing to cover his toned abs and muscular chest except the ink on his chest and arms. My eyes trailed every single detail on his body, and my heartbeat accelerated. I bit my lower lip because the only thing I could think of was the weight of his body on mine as he fucked me. God!

I walked over to him, taking in the scent of omelets and the sexy chef in the kitchen. “You know how to cook?”

“Yeah, being the oldest of four kids makes you learn that quite easily,” he said, his focus on the beef he was stirring.

“Wow!” Who would have thought a day would come when Andrei-fucking-Levov would be making me breakfast in his kitchen? The end of the world must’ve been truly near. “I’d never thought a ruthless mafia boss would have any skills other than killing.”

He shark-smiled, his eyes glowing like the sky when the sun was scorching. “I don’t have many skills, other than leading a group of nasty men, making the best breakfast—” he reduced the fire from the stove, and turned to me, mischief written all over his face. “—and fucking you.”

My cheeks ignited, spreading a fire that needed to be quenched to my clitoris. This man was something, truth to God. “Are you bragging, Mr. Levov?”
