“Little rabbit, if you don’t take them, your body will take longer to heal. Your thigh and your stomach are still swollen, and even around your eye. You need them. Why would you want to be in pain?”

She does not answer.

“I am not blind, you know. I see how you still flinch every time you move. You know the doctor told me that you most likely have broken ribs as well. He explained it to you, he cannot do much to help that, it has to heal on its own—but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer with the discomfort.”

I take her hand in mine and hold her palm upwards, dropping the pills into them. She immediately tosses them across the room and folds her arms across her chest.

I growl in frustration.

“Must I hold you down and force them down your throat?”

Her eyes shoot wide. When I hand her another two pills, she drops them into her mouth and swallows.

“Open your mouth,” I say, not believing her.

She rolls her eyes at me but does as I have asked. The pills are gone. Good.

“What is your name, little rabbit?” I sigh, lowering myself into the chair next to her bed.

She stares at me.

“Is there a reason you won’t tell me?”

“Is there a reason you are keeping me prisoner?” Her retort is sharp and full of anger.

“You are not my prisoner. You are my guest. You’re here because you have to rest and recover.”

She glares at me and I grind my jaw.

“I don’t think you understand how dangerous it is out there for you, little rabbit. Those men who took you took you for a reason and, for that same reason, they will want you back. It’s not safe for you to be out there. The safest place in the world for you right now is here with me.”

“Hmm,” she huffs, clearly not believing me.

For half an hour I sit with her, trying to talk to her. I guess I was wrong when I assumed that she was beginning to open up and willing to have a conversation. She is quiet again and not answering. Finally, I give in. “I was wondering if you would like some ice cream or something sweet?” I ask.

She squints at me.

“Something sweet, you know. The chef has been told to only make you healthy food, but you are doing really well, and I thought maybe you would like something nice?”

She blinks at me for a moment and hesitates before she answers.

“I—I would like some milk chocolate. The white one.” She stares down at her hands as she fidgets with her fingers.

“It will be my pleasure to arrange that for you. I know I’ve told you already, a few times now, but if there is anything at all that you want you only need to ask. I am here for you, little rabbit. I want to see you get strong and one day, I might even be lucky enough to see your smile.”

I stand to leave, but when I glance at her there are tears rolling down her cheeks.

I want to reach down and pull her into my arms, but I know that won’t go well with her.

“I’m so sorry, little rabbit. Truly, I am. For whatever you’ve been through.”

The doctor arrives late in the afternoon, and I walk with him into her room.

She is sitting up in bed.

“You are looking much better today,” he says with a smile.
