I wonder where he is.

I carefully stand up, holding onto the side table for support. Slowly, with planned steps and all of my focus, I walk to the window. When I reach it I turn and walk back to the bed. My heart is racing in my chest and my legs are shaking, but I do it again.

After five minutes I am tired again, so I settle back down.

Kiril has not come in. Usually, as soon as I wake up, he hears me and comes to see if I need anything.

I stare at the door.

Why would I be missing him? This is ridiculous.

Chapter 6 - Kiril

As the days merge into weeks and she walks a little further every time I take her out into the garden or around the house, I can see her strength growing. In the beginning, I was in awe of how she would grit her teeth against the pain and push a little further every time. She would go beyond the point of exhaustion and keep surprising me with what she is capable of.

Her fighting spirit is so much greater than I could have imagined.

Yet, she still pushes me away when I try to help her. She still does not speak to me. I spend every single day with Jennifer, looking after her, making sure she has everything she could ever need, yet she still seems to despise me. It is driving me to the brink of madness.

I am usually the calmest of all my brothers. They call me the diplomatic one. But when it comes to Jennifer, I want to tear my hair out and scream. How is she managing to grip me so tightly yet keep me so far from her? I am struggling, daily, with her beauty and her inner strength. The more I get to witness how incredible she is, the more I want her.

She is becoming intoxicatingly irresistible to me and it takes everything in my power not to let myself push against her, feel her body on mine, kiss her lips, and take her.

She is stubborn, she refuses help, and she makes everything ten times more difficult than it needs to be. Yet, I want her.

This morning, we are walking out in the field around my property. Several guards are watching us from a distance. I have them scout the surrounding area every time before I allow her outside. I have to keep her safe.

I am standing a few meters from her, trying to give her the space she demands through her intense glares. As usual, I cannot take my eyes off her. She leans down and brushes her hand over the tall, wild grasses at the edge of the fence. She smiles as she rubs the soft tufts between her fingers and a cool breeze catches her long blonde hair, lifting it and letting it play around her beautiful features.

She glances at me and her eyes are a brighter green than I have ever seen them before. She looks strong. She looks healthy. The way she moves tells me that most of her pain has healed. I can still see the pain in her eyes, but her body seems to have recovered.

I almost dread what the doctor is going to say when he comes to see her this evening.

Yes, I want her to heal. I want her to be strong and happy and no longer in pain. But I don’t want her to not need me.

I watch Jennifer as she skips, moving comfortably, towards a large tree. She brushes her fingers over the trunk.

“I think it’s time to go inside now,” I say, calling her to come over to me.

She pouts, pulling a sour face. I know she hates when I tell her what to do, but the way I see it, she belongs to me. She is mine. And I will take care of her.

She turns without a word and walks past me towards the house, not even glancing in my direction.

I roll my eyes. Walking briskly, I catch up with her, my hand against her lower back.

“What do you want for dinner tonight? Maybe we can eat outside on the deck overlooking the pool?”

She moves to the side, away from my touch.

“Steak? Lasagna? Maybe something a little different? Chinese? Sushi?”

She continues to ignore me, and I do my best to sound unfazed by it.

“I think I’m craving some sushi. It’s been a while since I had some. I’ll have the chef make a plan for us.”

She steps inside the house and goes straight to her room, flopping down on the bed with her back to me.

“Little rabbit, do you need anything at all?”
