I turn my body away from her so that she cannot see the growing need bulging against my pants. I stand and cannot help the angry growl that rumbles from my throat.

“I’ll be back once I’ve finished working. We can go for a walk then. Do not even try and go without me—my men will not let you.”

“I don’t even want to walk anymore.”

“For fuck’s sake.” I throw my hands in the air and storm out of the room. She is impossible.

“Kiril, your brother is here.” Ivan, my right-hand man, walks towards me when I step into the passage outside her room.

Ivan has been my eyes and ears and representing me since I found Jennifer and have not been leaving the house. He has been taking care of things for me in this absence.

“Which one? What does he want?” I ask.

“Paval. Something is going on and you need to hear about it.”

“Not here.” I pull him down the passage away from Jennifer’s bedroom door. “Bring him into the library. We can talk there.”

Ivan turns towards the entrance to welcome my brother in, and I make my way to the library. Paval has not been here since Jennifer arrived. Something big must be going on for him to feel the need to tell me in person.

I pour three whiskeys while I wait for them to arrive.

“Kiril.” My brother pulls me into a hug. His hand slaps against my back. “You look—angry?”

“It’s nothing. Just …” I nod my head towards Jennifer’s room and he chuckles.

“Well, unfortunately, I don’t have good news.” He takes the whiskey I have poured and hands it to Ivan before picking up another.

I take my own glass and sink into one of the leather sofas. “What’s going on?”

“We have to meet with Alexander.”

“I see no reason to entertain that asshole.”

“We don’t have a choice. Things have been getting more and more heated between him and us. We’ve had too many incidents to ignore now. He’s pushing. We need to put him in his place.”

“What does he want?”

“Isn’t it obvious? He wants his property back.”

My brother sips his drink and the ice moves against the glass.

“His property?” I ask.

“Indeed. He’s saying that we stole from him, and he wants what we took back.”

“Jennifer.”

“Yes, the girl.”

“That is not happening.”

“I’m going to arrange a meeting on neutral territory. This evening. You have to be there.”

I feel my jaw muscles working. That means I have to leave Jennifer alone tonight and I do not like that idea one bit.

“There’s nothing to think about here, Kiril,” Paval says. “You will be there.”

“I know. What time are we going?”
