“I am really feeling much better.”

Kiril shoots me a glare. “Jennifer.” The way he says my name tells me I do not have a choice in the matter.

“Fine.”

The doctor patiently goes through a range of different tests, asking me a lot of questions. He looks down my throat, makes me pee in a cup, and takes some blood samples.

I am sitting on the bed wondering why I suddenly feel completely fine and thinking again that all I needed was a bit of rest. It was just stress and leftover trauma, that’s all.

The doctor chuckles from the other side of the room where he is busy working over his bag.

Kiril and I both turn to look at him.

“We’ve found out what’s going on,” he says, turning to face us with something in his hand. “Jennifer, you are pregnant.”

The silence in the room is so loud it hurts my ears.

The look on my face must be one of pure and absolute horror. That is not possible. This is not happening. No. Absolutely not.

The doctor is still grinning, and my eyes shoot from his face to Kiril’s. Kiril looks—why does he have a smile on his face? What the fuck?

The doctor sees my look of horror. “I guess I don’t have anything else I need to do here. I will run the test again on the blood sample, and then I can give you more information about how far along you are and—well, anything else. Just confirmation, really.”

I don’t need confirmation about how long I have been pregnant. I know exactly when it happened, and I am furious. This is all Kiril’s fault. He is the reason this happened.

The doctor says goodbye and I still haven’t spoken. I am biting my tongue, holding back the anger I feel.

When we are alone, Kiril turns to me with a smile.

“Pregnant? I can’t believe it.”

“Why the fuck are you smiling?” I shout. “This isn’t good. This is bad. This is really bad. I don’t want this.”

“Little rabbit, everything is going to be okay. I promise you that. I will be here every step of the way. I will take care of you and our baby.”

“That’s not the point.”

“Of course, it is.” He looks confused.

“This isn’t happening.”

“What do you mean?”

“This isn’t real.”

“Little rabbit, this is very real, and it is happening.” His voice is becoming more authoritative as he speaks.

“No, this is not happening!” I shout.

His mouth pulls tight.

“Jennifer, it’s alright. You’re just in shock, I think. Take a deep breath, okay? You have nothing to worry about. I am here. I will always be here. You will never want for anything. You and the baby. You will have everything you could ever dream of. Blood protects blood. I will always protect both of you.”

“Please get out.”

I can’t deal with this. Everything feels as though it is suffocating me. The walls are too close. The air is too hot. My body is heavy and sinking into the bed. Everything starts spinning. Kiril steps towards me and reaches out.

“Stop,” I say. “Please. Get out.”
