I sit down across from Fyodor and Maxim with my head in my hands. They watch me closely, waiting for me to gather my thoughts.

Finally, I know that I have no choice. I have to tell them. I lift my head and sigh.

“Jennifer is pregnant.”

“Fuck. Was it—did they do that to her when she was taken?” Fyodor’s voice is thick with disgust.

“No.” I shake my head. “She is pregnant with my child.”

There is absolute silence as they all stare at me in shock.

I lean back in my chair and take a deep breath. “I will not lose her. For any reason whatsoever. Including the threat of war.”

Chapter 13 - Jennifer

Darya walks into my room carrying two cups of tea. She stops in the doorway.

“Come on, follow me,” she says. “I think it will be nicer to drink this out on the pool deck.”

“Okay.” I stand up to follow her.

“It’s such a stunning day outside. Not too hot, kind of just perfect.” She chats as we walk through the mansion and out into the sunshine. I blink against the light. I have not been out of my room in so long. I realize now that I can feel the sun on my skin that I really wasn’t doing myself any good.

I have just been so lost in thought.

Darya places our mugs on the table between two chairs and sits down in one. Kicking off her shoes, she rests her feet on the chair opposite her and wiggles her toes.

“It feels so good to just relax sometimes,” she says.

“I think I have been doing too much relaxing,” I say quietly.

She glances toward me. “I guess too much of it does get boring.”

I pull my socks off my feet and also lift them onto the chair opposite me, getting comfortable. The sun shines down onto my body and it feels like life is being injected into me.

I place my hand over my belly.

“So, what do you do around here all day?” she asks.

“Nothing, really. Kiril kind of keeps hovering all the time and I don’t have much space to do my own thing.”

She nods, smiling. “My brother is very overprotective. He used to smother me, too. On my first day of school, he was years ahead of me, but he didn’t leave my side. It drove me crazy. Everyone thought I came to school with a bodyguard. It was so embarrassing.” She chuckles. “But I know it’s just his way of showing love. At the time, I didn’t know it, though, so we used to get into fights. He would just laugh at me when I tried to lecture him. He was so tall and buff and scary even then.” She laughs again at the memory.

“He is very protective, I know. I guess I’m just not used to needing protection.”

We chat for a long time, and even though she is a complete stranger to me I find myself relaxing more and more the longer I am around her. It has been so long since I got to spend time with a female. It is a relief. I have wanted to talk to Lauren about everything in my mind, but maybe, just maybe I can trust Darya with my thoughts.

I glance over to her. Will she tell Kiril everything we speak about?

“Jenn?” She looks at me. “Is something bothering you?”

“Sort of.”

“You can tell me if you want to. You don’t have to. But if you want to talk, I am a very good listener.”

“It’s just—I don’t think I should.”

“Are you worried about Kiril? Is it something you don’t want him to know? I promise you I won’t say anything if that’s what you want. I lived in a house with four brothers. I know what it’s like to need a girl to speak to.”
