I think back to how Alexander reacted when I told him that his plan was ruined. When he found out that we knew he had threatened Jennifer he didn’t even try to deny it. He immediately started screaming about how he was going to kill her, that she did not do what he told her to do. It proves that everything Jennifer told me was true. He did threaten her. She was afraid for her life. He even mentioned her friend tonight, so that was also true. Jennifer was honest with me about it in the end.

I arrive home late. It is dark and quiet in the mansion.

I try to move silently, but when I walk into the hallway outside of Jennifer’s room, I hear crying.

I look inside but it is too dark to see what is happening.

“Little rabbit?” I say softly.

She chokes back a sob and I hear the bed moving. “Kiril, um, I—”

“Are you crying?” I rush over to her bed and sit down on the edge. I hesitate but then pull her against my chest, ignoring the pain. I wrap my arms around her and hold her tightly.

I feel her body shake against me.

“What happened, little rabbit? Why are you upset?”

“It’s nothing. I’m just being silly.”

“No, you are not going to shut me out like that. You need to talk to me, Jenn. I want to know what you are feeling and thinking.”

“Kiril, it really doesn’t matter. I never meant for you to see me crying.”

I run my fingers through her hair. In the dark, I can just see the outline of her beautiful features and how the light catches the curves of her body.

“Little rabbit, tell me. I’m not leaving until you do.”

She sighs against my chest.

“It’s just, I feel, I don’t know.” She leans away from me and I let her go.

“It’s okay, just talk.”

“You have been avoiding me so much lately, Kiril. I think I know what’s going on. And I understand, too. You have your whole life to live and now suddenly you’re stuck with me and have a baby on the way. I know this can’t be what you want. I know that’s why you’re pushing me away. You hardly look at me. You don’t come near me. It’s as though you have realized that I am not enough for you. I just think—I don’t think I am enough for you.”

The horror of her words cuts into me. How can she think that?

I have been avoiding her out of respect for her, to not push her or force her to feel the same way I feel about her.

“Little rabbit, you have it so wrong.”

“I do?”

“Yes.” I pull her close to me again, running my hand over her cheek. “I have been avoiding you because I don’t trust myself around you. You have no idea how difficult it is for me to stay away from me. All I ever want to do is have you in my arms, hold you against me, kiss you, touch you. I want you right by my side every moment of every day, and it drives me crazy.”

Her eyes shine in the darkness. “I don’t understand,” she whispers.

“Little rabbit, I am madly in love with you. Everything I have done is because I love you.”

“Love?”

“Love.”

Her breathing becomes heavier. I can see the way her chest rises and falls. Her lips part slightly and the light catches her face. I am waiting for her to respond, to say anything, to tell me what that means to her, but she doesn’t speak.

She reaches her hand out and traces her fingers along my jaw. She pulls me towards her, and I don’t need any more of an invite than that. I wrap my hand around the back of her neck and my lips crash into hers. I kiss her with such intensity, letting go of everything I have been holding onto for the past few months. I have finally told her how I feel, and her response was to pull me closer.

She wraps her hands around my neck and lifts herself onto my lap, straddling me.
