“To my room.”
Her lips part and her eyes are wide.
“I want you close to me,” I explain. “I don’t like the thought of you sleeping alone in here. If you’re not ready, I understand. If you need your space or find it more comfortable to sleep alone, that’s alright. But I want you in my bed. Our bed.”
“I would very much love that, Kiril.” She lays her head on the pillow.
“Good.” I lean down and scoop her into my arms, cradling her against my chest. “Then you may as well rest in there right now.”
She giggles as I carry her through to my bedroom and lie her down on the massive bed. I pull the blankets over her as she snuggles against my pillow. “It smells like you,” she says, closing her eyes.
“Rest, little rabbit. I will come and check on you later.”

With a deep sigh, I slide my phone out of my pocket and dial Paval.
This might not go as I want it to, but I have to try to resolve this tension between us.
“Kiril.” His voice is clipped and sharp.
“Paval, I wanted to apologize.”
Immediately, I know I have caught him off guard.
“For what?” he asks.
“For not being entirely open with you about the situation that I’m in.”
“Alright? What’s going on?”
“With regards to Jennifer. I know that last time we spoke, I asked for your advice about what to do with Golubev, but I didn’t tell you everything. I think you would have reacted differently if you knew.”
“Okay, Kiril, then tell me.”
“I have fallen in love with Jennifer. For a long time now. I love her and that alone would make me fight for her, but there’s more to it than just that.”
“I didn’t know. I thought you were just taking care of her while she healed, and then after that, I thought you were just keeping her close to avoid her giving information to Golubev.”
“That was part of it, but while that was happening, I grew very fond of her. Look, the other part of it is that Jennifer is pregnant. She’s carrying my baby.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” He sounds angry.
“Paval—” I know he thinks the organization comes before everything, but he cannot possibly be angry about this.
“Kiril, why the fuck would you keep that from me? You are going to be a father? Man, of course, you would want to protect her to the end of the Earth. She’s family. She’s blood now. I am so happy for you.”
“You’re happy for me?”
“Of course, you asshole. I can’t believe I’m only finding this out now.”
“I guess I didn’t expect this reaction.” I chuckle.
“Well, your behavior makes sense now. I thought you had just gone loopy. I’m glad to find this out. I guess we have a lot of things to plan, urgently. I’m going to start rallying everyone together. You said that Golubev threatened her. Does he know? Everything?”
“Yes, unfortunately, he does.”
“And he threatened her knowing she was pregnant with your child?”
