He hangs up before I can snap at him not to call me that. It’s a stupid nickname he gave me when we were kids, and he loves to use it to irritate me.

I’m on my second cup of coffee when I text Summer. I was going to try to hold off until lunch, but I need to hear from her. And I don’t want to think about what it means that I’m so desperate to talk to her.

Dane: Good morning, baby girl. Did you sleep well?

Summer: I slept better than I have in months.

Summer: Did you?

Dane: I want to say yes but it would be a lie. It’s not easy to sleep with a hard on.

Summer: LOL. I just spewed coffee all over. It’s probably not funny for you, but picturing it made me giggle.

Dane: I don’t know if I like that you’re giggling over picturing my dick. You’re going to give me a complex.

Summer: From what I could feel, you have nothing to have a complex about.

Dane: You’re adorable. Did you eat breakfast?

Summer: Not yet. Coffee first. It’s the most important meal of the day, you know.

Dane: Little girl. Food. You need nutrition. Find something to eat to go with your coffee. I want a picture for proof.

Summer: Sheesh. I never knew you were so bossy.

Dane: Now you know. Be a good girl and I’ll reward you tonight.

Summer: Ohhh, I like that. What kind of reward? Does it have to do with your dick?

Jesus. Who knew texting could cause my cock to go hard?

Dane: Is that the kind of reward you want?

Three dots appear and disappear several times as I watch the screen. I’ve never wanted to fuck someone as badly as I want to fuck Summer, and I think she wants it too. She sure seemed to want it last night when we were in her bedroom.

Summer: Yes, please.

I smile at my phone. I can totally picture her pink cheeks right now.

Dane: Such good manners. Be a good girl today and eat breakfast, and I think that can be arranged. How about you come over to my house tonight?

Summer: I’d like that.

Dane: Good. Me too. I need to get back to work. I’ll check on you later. Don’t forget to send me a picture.

Fifteen minutes later, she sends me a selfie with her holding a bowl of oatmeal. I grin like a fool for the rest of the day. Everything that’s happening between us? I want more of it and I think I want it forever.

SUMMER

“What are you doing?”

My mom pauses and looks up at me from where she’s digging through her dresser. She woke up agitated this morning, and it’s been stressful ever since.

First, she got upset because I accidentally called her Mom. Then, she got mad when I wouldn’t let her drive to go to the PTA meeting at my elementary school that she insisted she was still part of. After that, I found her putting on her pajamas over the clothes she was already wearing. And it’s gone downhill from there.

“You stole it. Where did you put it?” she demands.
