“Let’s put this in the kitchen. I brought some wine, too. Thought maybe it would be a goodnight for it.”

When we get into the kitchen and are out of sight of my mom, I throw my arms around him from behind before he can set the pizza and wine down.

“Thank you.”

He puts everything on the counter, then turns in my arms so he’s facing me. Then he wraps me up in his embrace and kisses the top of my head.

“I’m here, baby. I got you.”

I let out a deep sigh that feels like I’ve been holding onto all day and melt into him. We say nothing, but it doesn’t feel like we need to. Having him here calms me, and I can finally relax. Dane will catch me if I fall.

After a few minutes, he lets me go and cups my face in his hands. Then, slowly, he lowers his face to mine and presses a delicate kiss to my lips. It’s as light as a feather, but it sends a bolt of electricity through me.

“I want you to go take a shower. When you’re done, text me and I’ll come into your room and get you dressed in some comfy clothes. If I could, I’d bathe you myself, but someone needs to stay with your mom. Then, I’m going to feed you dinner and pour you a glass of wine. And after your mom turns in, I’m going to get my Little girl ready for bed. Any questions?”

With my head tilted back, I stare up at him. My heart is racing, and I’m so far gone for this man, it’s terrifying.

“No, Daddy. But you don’t have to hang out here all evening. I’m sure you have stuff to do.”

He strokes my cheek, holding my gaze with his own. “Nope. I’ve already showered, and this is where I want to be.”

“Okay,” I whisper.

Okay,” he says and nudges me toward my bedroom.

Before I make it very far, he grabs my elbow and lowers his mouth to my ear. “Enjoy your shower, but don’t even think about touching that pretty little pussy while you’re in there. Understood?”

Holy hells bells.

I swallow and look up at him wide-eyed. His expression is stern. He means it, and from the way he’s staring at me, I know I don’t want to disobey.

“Yes, Daddy.”

He winks and gently swats my bottom to get me moving again. And now, I can’t stop thinking about what he told me I’m not allowed to do. Funny how that works. All my blood has rushed to my clit, and I’m a horny mess as I turn on the water.

DANE

While she’s in the shower, I turn on the oven and slide the pizzas in there to keep them hot. Then I set the table before I go out to the living room and sit on the couch across from her mom’s recliner.

Mrs. Pierce glances up from her latest knitting project and smiles. “Hello. Who are you?”

I offer her a kind smile. “I’m your neighbor, ma’am. I live in the gray house next door.”

Her eyes immediately light up. “Oh, that’s a wonderful house. The people who lived there before were always so nice. They had two strapping young boys and a girl. My daughter was best friends with the girl who lived there. Have you been there long?”

“A while.” It’s the truth. I have been in that house a while. My whole life. But I’m not going to correct her and confuse her more.

She starts knitting again. “My Summer was in love with one of the boys next door. I think he was in love with her too, but he was too afraid to admit it. He was a good boy. Always fixing up cars for people who couldn’t afford to take them to a mechanic. He fixed my car a few times. I wonder what happened to that family.”

Warmth spreads through me. She has no clue she told me a secret her daughter probably doesn’t want me to know, but I’m glad she did.

I might go to hell for continuing this conversation, but I can’t stop myself. “Did they end up together? Your daughter and the boy next door?”

Her fingers pause and she furrows her eyebrows. “You know, I’m not sure. I hope so. He was a good boy. The type of man I always wanted her to end up with. Hardworking. Kind. Strong. Manly.” She laughs softly. “He was awfully handsome too. I couldn’t tell you how many times I caught my daughter peeking at him from the window in the kitchen.”

I smile, and it feels as if I could explode with happiness. I know it’s not the same, but in a way, it’s like I got her mom’s approval. Even though I don’t need it, it’s still good to have. I want Mrs. Pierce to approve of the man Summer ends up with.
