She stands a little taller and her eyes narrow, but she keeps her mouth shut. For a moment, I’m disappointed. I like when she runs her mouth, even though I know it’s going to get her in all kinds of trouble one of these days.

“I have a meeting in a few weeks. I need you to be there.”

“Why?” she asks, a bit of an edge to her voice as she leans back against the door.

“Because I’m telling you.”

She shakes her head, her frown deepening. “You really are a pain in my ass sometimes.”

“Is that any way to talk to your boss?”

Hadley shrugs. “The way I see it, you could fire me. But I also have a great case for harassment. The last thing you need is media attention drawn to you.”

I scowl and consider firing her then and there. My life would be easier without her around. If she was gone, I wouldn’t sit in my office and fight temptation every shift she worked.

“The way I see it, I am a threat to you. At least I can be if you push me too far.”

“You do know who you’re threatening, right?” I arch an eyebrow, my jaw clenching. “I could kill you right now if I wanted to and nobody would care. They would dispose of the body without a second thought.”

“If you were going to kill me, you would have done it by now. So, why don’t you tell me what I’m doing here and then we can both move on with our nights?”

“Like I said.” I exhale hard and try to maintain my composure. Hadley is exceptionally good at getting beneath my skin. “I have a meeting in three weeks and I want you there with me.”

“Why me? Why not take Rio? I’m not your bodyguard.” Hadley smirks and stands up straight, her hand on the doorknob. “I didn’t sign up to get even more involved with the cartel than I already am. You’re going to have to find somebody else.”

“Hadley, you seem to forget that you agreed to be my bottle service girl at every meeting I take.”

She sighs, her shoulders slumping slightly. “Alright. Just tell me when and where. I’ll be there.”

My mouth nearly drops open as I look at her. Not once has she ever agreed to anything this quickly.

“Are you feeling alright?” I ask as I get up and round the desk. “Being this agreeable isn’t like you.”

Hadley scowls and crosses her arms. “Look, I made a deal with you and I’m going to stick to that deal. Pretty soon I’ll be done with this job and on my way. I just have to get through the next several weeks and then I can go back to school and the life I had before I met you.”

I chuckle, though her words sting slightly. Though I know that I am by no means her favorite person, I thought that she was starting to warm up to me.

Perhaps I only have myself fooled.

It’s better if she leaves. People you get attached to only die in the end. You don’t need to lose another person.

It’s better to be alone than to live with the grief of losing another person.

“Hadley, there is no more life before you met me. You work for the cartel now. You’re in just as deep as the rest of us, whether you like it or not.”

Her cheeks turn a bright shade of red and anger blazes in her eyes.

There’s that passion I’m looking for.

“I’m not part of the cartel,” she says, indignation in her tone. “I would never sink that low.”

I grin as I stalk toward her like a predator hunting their prey. Her breath hitches as I loom over her, our bodies nearly pressed together. As I run one finger along the curve of her cheek, I’m sure that she’s going to start yelling.

Instead, lust fills her gaze, though I can see her internal fight over it. Her stare is conflicted. Hadley looks like a deer caught in the headlights without an escape.

“Darling, you sunk that low when you put my cock in your pretty little pussy. Now, if you would like to reconsider your position on how low you have to sink, I would be more than happy to hear it. I don’t take too kindly to people insulting my profession.”

She bites her bottom lip for a second. The urge to take that bottom lip between my own teeth before kissing her senseless is strong. I want to taste every inch of her.
