“Who are you?” I ask, sitting up a little straighter. “And why am I becoming your problem? I’ve never even met you.”

“Order up!” one of the chefs yells, winking at me as he sets the tray of food in the pass.

I get up and grab the tray, ready to head back out into the club when the girl steps in my way.

“You don’t get to just walk around here like you own the place,” the woman says. “You think that you’re someone because you’re Jovan’s new girl, but you’re not.”

“I fail to see what working Jovan’s table has to do with anything.”

She tosses her inky hair over her shoulder and sniffs. “I’m Erica. I had the best tips in the building until you walked in here. I don’t know whose cock you sucked to get such a cushy position, but it ends now. You’re fucking with my tips.”

I sigh and clutch the platter a little tighter. “Look, if there’s a problem with your schedule, you should probably talk to someone about that. Unfortunately, I’m not the person you should be talking to.”

“He sleeps with me too,” Erica says, a wide grin spreading across her face. “You’re nothing special. You think that waiting on his tables is something important but it’s just another way to keep you close while he fucks around with everyone here.”

I know better than to let her think she’s right about what is happening between me and Jovan. “Congratulations? If sleeping with the boss is your thing, then I guess you’re a lucky girl. However, I keep my legs closed. Now, if you don’t mind, I have to get this tray to my guests.”

Even as I brush by her and head out of the kitchen, I’m fuming. Though I know that there is nothing serious between me and Jovan, I’m irritated. I have no right to be jealous, since I keep trying to stay away from him, but I hate knowing that he is sleeping with anyone else.

Especially after what happened between us the other day.

He insisted on spending the day with me. We had a good time. It didn’t seem like he was just fucking me to have someone to fuck, but I’ve been a bad judge of character before.

“Alright, boys,” I say a few minutes later as I approach the table. “I have the food and I’ll be back with another bottle in a minute.”

The men look up and start reaching for food the moment the platter is set in the middle of the table. I step back and turn but a hand wraps around my wrist. Jovan grins up at me, and for a second, I feel like I’m the only person in the room.

“You’re doing a great job tonight,” he says as he slips a hundred dollar bill into my hand. “I’m going to talk them into giving you some great tips tonight.”

I shake my head and stuff the money in the pocket of my apron. “Don’t bother. You’ll just put more of a target on my back.”

His eyebrows knit together. “What are you talking about?”

“Your little girlfriend with the black hair and the boobs up to her neck thinks that I’m fucking with her tips. Or fucking you. I’m still not sure what the point of her little tirade was.”

“Hadley, if there is someone bothering you, I can deal with them.”

“Don’t bother.” I pull my hand away from him. “I can deal with this shit on my own. If you get involved, it’s just going to make it worse for me.”

“Kitten.”

“Nope. Not here. Not anywhere, honestly. I should have known better than to let things get complicated between us.”

I walk away from him as the other men start calling his name. His gaze burns into my back as I grab the tray and empty bottle. As I head to the bar, I take a deep breath.

Getting involved in any capacity with Jovan is a bad idea. What happened in the kitchen was just another reminder of that.

Hours pass, midnight coming and going before my shift finally ends.

Kennedy yawns as the bright lights come on and the door downstairs slams. The club is closed for the night and it’s time to start cleaning.

“I don’t know if I have the energy to come over,” I say as I glance at the time on my phone. “It’s nearly four in the morning. I have to get some stuff settled for school by lunchtime.”

Kennedy hums along with the soft music playing while she kicks off her heels. “You know that you can come over whenever. I just want to get all the details that I can out of you. Who knows when I’ll have the chance again.”

“I tell you a lot of things,” I say as I kick off my own heels and grab a bottle of disinfectant.

She scoffs and tosses me a rag from the pile on the bar. “You do not tell me a lot of things. Hell, the only person I know who is more closed off than you is Jovan.”
