“Hey, boss,” Rio says. He sighs and I can hear shuffling in the background. “We have a problem.”

“What kind of problem? Do I need to get Hadley out of here? Has Felix found out about her?”

Rio mutters a curse under his breath as something thuds in the background. “Sorry, boss. Kennedy decided that she was going to move all the furniture in the apartment. Apparently, I need to walk into the coffee table at two in the fucking morning.”

“Move it all back later. What’s the problem?”

“I went to check on Hadley’s apartment like you asked. Felix has been there.”

The world around me comes to a screeching halt. The game that Hadley and I have been playing — pretending that we’re just a couple on vacation — had to come to an end sooner or later.

Felix Domingos is a man with a mission and he isn’t going to rest until he’s destroyed everything I have left.

It’s what I would do if I were him.

It’s what I already did.

“How do you know that it was Felix?” I ask as I lean against the counter.

“He left a note. Said that he would be coming for her sooner than you think. There wasn’t much else on the note, other than a promise to kill her.”

The blood drains from my body and my head begins to spin. I used to pride myself on being calm under pressure but when it comes to Hadley, I can’t seem to think straight at all.

“I want people assigned to watch that apartment every single fucking day. I don’t want anyone near her home that we don’t know.” I push off the counter and head outside, needing the cold night air to clear my head a little.

As I stand on the back deck, the fear of what can happen to Hadley and our baby threatens to consume me. I have to do everything that I can to keep her safe.

“After you have people ready and watching over her home, start getting together everything we need to move her out. We have to move quickly and not give her time to think about it. If she knows that it’s coming, she’ll make the entire process hell.”

“Do you really think that it’s a good idea to force her into that?”

I lean against the railing and look out over the backyard. “I know that it’s not a good idea, but there is no other way if he knows where she lives. I want her to have a few days after we get back to settle in. After that, we have to move her. I’ll make sure she has a day off scheduled and that’s the day we’ll do it. She’ll see that she has no choice in the matter.”

“Yes, boss,” Rio says, disapproval clear in his voice. “It’s your funeral.”

“Leave worrying about what Hadley is going to do to me. Just get ready to move her entire apartment in a couple days.”

“Alright.”

Rio ends the call before I can talk to him about anything else. While I know that he doesn’t approve of the plan, it’s the only one I can see right now.

Felix is already breaking into her apartment. A few of my people stationed outside at all hours of the day aren't going to stop him if he wants to get her.

She’s safer with me than she is with anyone else.

I can protect her.

I won’t let her die like my family did.

Hadley is going to move in with me and she’s going to be safe. I’m not going to let Felix get to her or our baby. I need her where I can control the environment.

I’m not going to fail her like I’ve failed so many other people. Hadley is going to be safe with me whether she likes it or not. Sooner or later, she will see that this is for her own good.

While I can understand she doesn’t want the baby to be raised in the cartel, the fact remains that the baby is my heir.

She could run with the baby to the other side of the world and Felix would find her.

My other enemies would find her.
