My cheeks warm as I sink into the couch beside her and shake my head. “There aren’t that many details. It was some incredible sex. He was great to be around and I had a wonderful time. We only argued once about my living situation.”

Kennedy hums and looks away from me, suddenly interested in everything but our conversation. There is a guilty look on her face that instantly has me suspicious.

“Kennedy, what is going on?” I ask, putting my plate on the coffee table and turning to face her. “You look like you have a secret.”

She frowns and turns to face me. Kennedy crosses her legs and stuffs a slice of pizza in her mouth, trying to stall. I cross my arms and wait for her to finish eating.

“Men are idiots. I’m not supposed to tell you what’s going on because I wasn’t supposed to hear it in the first place. I’ve been arguing with Rio about it for the last couple days.”

“Arguing with Rio about what?”

My stomach lurches as car doors slam outside. When I get up and go to the window, Rio and Jovan are walking toward the building. They’re carrying stacks of empty boxes while other men trail behind them.

“What the hell is this?” I ask, my tone sharp as I turn to face Kennedy. “You knew about this and you’re on their side?”

“I’m not on their side, I’m just in a difficult position. If you want to sneak out, I can stall them. You know that sooner or later he’ll track you down, though. Jovan is a powerful man.”

I sigh and run my hand through my hair. Though I know what a difficult position Kennedy is in, I can’t help but feel a bit betrayed. She should have told me as soon as she found out what Jovan was planning.

Instead, she left me to be blindsided by this mess.

“You’re right. I’m not going to take off. He’ll just track me down and drag me back. However, if he thinks that he is going to be able to get away with this shit without a fight, he has another thing coming.”

I grab my pizza and put it in the kitchen before going to wait by the door. As soon as there is a knock I pull it open and stand in Jovan’s path.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” I ask, my tone bright and cheerful even though I’m fuming inside.

How dare he think that he can march in here and order me to move in with him. Especially after the talk we had.

When we got back from his cabin, we talked about allowing people to watch over me. I’ve had men following me around everywhere I go, making sure that I’m safe. I thought it was enough of a compromise to get Jovan to take a step back. I didn’t think that it was only a temporary situation before he stormed in here.

“There’s been a change in plans. You’re going to be moving in after all.” His gaze meets mine with a look that leaves little room for argument.

At least, that’s likely what he thinks.

“I told you that I was fine with people watching over me. What’s changed from the other day to now?”

“Nothing,” he says through gritted teeth. “Just let me in so we can get your shit packed. You’re moving tonight.”

“Like hell I am. We might have something going on, but that doesn’t mean you get to control my life.”

I step back and let him and the others in, but only because I don’t want my nosey neighbors to hear the conversation. After I close the door behind them, I turn to Jovan, ready to keep arguing about my freedom.

“Hadley, please don’t argue with me. I just want to make sure that you and the baby are safe.” He tosses the stack of boxes onto the counter. “And to be honest, I don’t care how that makes you feel right now. Your safety is my first priority. If that means that I have to kidnap you, then that’s what I’m going to do.”

Kennedy steps between us and looks up at Jovan. “This is wrong, please don’t do this.”

“Stay out of it,” Rio says as he hooks Kennedy around the waist and pulls her out of the way. “Come help me pack her clothing before one of the others gets to it. You know they’ll be itching for the chance to go through a woman’s underwear drawer.”

I sigh and look over at Kennedy. While I appreciate her trying to help, I don’t want her to put herself in a position that’s only going to cause problems in her life.

“It’s fine, Kennedy,” I say with a tight smile. “Go with Rio. I can handle this myself.”

Jovan watches me as Kennedy and Rio head into my bedroom. The other men busy themselves with packing up the kitchen and living room. Their ability to ignore the tension in the room is amazing.

“If nothing has changed, then why has our agreement changed?” I take a step toward him, tilting my head slightly to look him in the eyes. “Jovan, what the hell is going on? If there’s a threat to our child, then I need to know.”

“We’ll discuss everything later. Right now, I need you to get packed. One way or another, you’re going to be moving.”
