Page 10 of Marriage and Malice

I need a way to make him uphold his end of our deal. He may not want my protection anymore, but I still need his.

And he’s going to learn what happens when he crosses the cartel.

I get inside the car and, as expected, Camila is fuming. She turns her head away from me.

Good. I need the quiet to come up with a plan anyway.

As our driver puts the car in motion, I drum my fingers on my leg before glancing at the time.

It’s getting later in the day, and soon, musicians are going to be flocking to the bars.

I might not have wanted this marriage, but as soon as I agreed, I had Ruben do some digging. I wanted to know the sort of person I was bringing into my home.

Jeremiah’s younger daughter is a musician, and she spends every moment she can in the bars, trying to sing and play guitar for the crowds.

Ruben got the name of the bar where she’s performing at for the next several weeks and her slotted times, which is why I know where she'll be tonight and when I can catch her there.

A plan starts to come together in my mind.

I know how to get what I want and how to piss Jeremiah off at the same time.

Guess I’m going to go pay his precious little daughter a visit.

Zoe grins as she waves to the crowd before getting off the stage.

My gaze drags up her long legs before settling on her face.

I don't miss the sparkle in those green eyes as she walks the dim room over to where I’m sitting at the bar.

Though she doesn’t know who I am, I got her name and picture a couple of hours ago.

Ruben tried to give me her information when he was doing her background check.

At the time, I didn’t think the information would be all that useful, but it’s important to know your enemy and what that enemy is offering.

I just wasn't ready to put a face or name on her yet. The marriage could remain an abstract problem for a little while longer. I just wanted to be told she was safe to bring home.

Thanks to her dad's antics, I was forced to get acquainted with her a bit sooner than I had prepared for.

So, here we are.

“You were amazing up there,” I say as she stands beside me.

Her long hair is tousled like she’s just had the best sex of her life. The makeup around her eyes is dark and smokey. Any other place and time, I'd drag her off into a corner.

“Thanks,” Zoe says, her smile too sweet.

She’s not the kind of woman who would be able to withstand life in the cartel, that much is clear.

“Can I buy you a drink?”

I’m already motioning to the bartender and taking out my wallet. “You’re the kind of woman who looks like she enjoys sex on the beach.”

Bright red cheeks frame that perfect smile.

My cock stiffens as I consider what that blush would look like if she was on her knees for me.

Despite the ripped jeans and messy hair, Zoe is the kind of woman who screams innocence.
